Question about 1991 Subaru Loyale

Hello, I have a 91 subaru loyale with 200000 miles. When I am near the end of a gear and about to shift up, a rattling/knocking occurs. A friend told me it may just be the heat shield on the exhaust rattling (or a pebble in the shield). Or could it be the sign of a larger problem?

Not being able to hear the sound my self makes it hard to tell for sure. The shield for the exhaust is a good place to start. Only takes a few secounds to slide under and make sure the screws are tight and the folds are crimped tightly. The crimps loosen up occasionally and a pair of pliers will secure them easily. Bad 3-4 solenoid, or burnt clutch band due to low fluid level. The solenoid is about a $70 part.

1990 subaru shifts fine when cold and then when hot will not shift out first gear

check the oil level in the transmission as there may be insufficient / too much oil for correct operation of the transmission . There may also be a leak in a line or plug that was not tightened properly

I want to know how to replace the axel on the front passenger side - the car is a '91 Subaru Loyale, manual transmission, front wheel drive

easy,just take the outer tie rod end nut off,cv axle nut and strut bolts,swing it out,some you might have allen head bolts at the tramnsmission also,very easy job.

I have a 1994 subaru impreza that has a knocking sound comeing from the engine when i start it up it knocks but then the knocking sound goes away after a couple of minutes what could it be?

Could be many different problems. Fist one that comes to mind if you have alot of miles is just oil and filter needing replaced or oil too thin. The other problem could be piston slap which occurs when you have a lot of miles and wear on the sleeves is past recomendation. It allows the pistons to rattle a bit till the heat takes over and straightens them out. Usualy consumes s fair amont of oil when this is the problem. Hope this helps and feel free to add more coment to the problem if you don't think these are the problems and we will see if I can suggest something else.

Loud Lifter possibly stuck! Help please!!

The ticking lifter on the Loyale is a common problem. There's a small o-ring between the cam tower and the head that, after so many hundreds of thousands of miles, would "fail" (not to a dangerous point) and the lifters would be partially starved of oil. It's not THAT serious... they can go hundreds of thousands of more miles like that. If you replace that o-ring, replace it with a spring reinforced ring so it doesn't fail. Those can be found at wwwdotthepartsbindotcom. As for the Legacy... those early 2.5s were cruddy. I've seen alot of them throw rods, lock up WAY before they should have. Best bet would be to replace it with a slightly underpowered but bullet-proof early model Legacy EJ22 or go with a newer EJ25. I would just go with the 2.2L.

Course the simple fixes first: FLUID LVL, CHK undercar at linkage for loose, worn fittings, if car is equipped with transmission modulator and the diaphram is split then you will smoke alot too! My bet is the linkage needs attention.

Dodge Intrepid 2000

Have had two intrepids that each lasted to almost 200000 miles - even with teenagers driving the last few years. The gear shifting thing came up on both of them. It has always been hit or miss as to when this happens. the only solutions we used were add transmission fluid, if necessary, and otherwise change the trans fluid if its been 50,000 miles since the last change. Also, letting it sit a few minutes (to cool?) does make a difference.
