The truck will run well but then begin to idle at high RPM's...shut it off and then it won't restart until it has cooled for a couple of hours...have had the catalytic converter replaced along with the automatic throttle senser...but it still will idle high and then die at a stop sign and then not start

You engine is TBI, It uses a MAP sensor check the vacuum line for crack and make sure yo have a good seal, The distributor also check and make sure the pick up does not have corrosion which causes the relutor to stick. As for the EGR it would cause a misfire, and yes the do fail. I am sticking with the IAC as a problem its a stepper motor and has a high failure rate, chack also the ECT (engine coolant temp sensor) for corrosion that gives false reading.

Intermittent fuel starvation, high rpm at idle restart eng all ok

You should verify you have proper fuel pressure. Check with a gauge when cold and hot. Possible clogged fuel filter is not allowing enough gas to feed engine. Verify pressure at idle and also under load when driving.
