Question about 1997 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

Distributer question I have a car that was with a mechanic for 1 month with a distributer problem and so I decided to retrieve the car (long story). I have sourced a new distributer for it but the old one has been taken out. So now I need the firing order and timing setting for a 1997 MITSUBISHI LANCER 1.8 litre WAGON (AUSTRALIAN) Car does not appear in product list.

Your firing order is 1-3-4-2 Your engine cylinder from the passenger to driver's side is 4-3-2-1 Your distributor rotates counter clock wise and #1 is the first post.
Unfortunately Mitsubishi make provisions for checking and adjusting the ignition timing with the use of a scan tool. Most shops do have a scan tool that can be used to check and adjust the ignition timing. sorry friend

What i need to change distributer cap

First you need a mechanic ! then you need to turn the engine to TDC with # 1 cylinder on the compression stroke , then you need to mark all the ignition wires so you know how they go back on, a special wrench (usually 9/16) to get to the hold down bolt on the distributor .

I have a Mitsubishi lancer 2000 and have taken the wires off the distributor in order to change the spark plug leads without concern of how to put them back on. Any ideas on the order

4 cylinder, firing order normally 1342. Take off distributer cap, set engine with number 1 cylinder on top of compression stroke. you may have to take out the number one plug, turn moter by hand and feel for compression with finger on hole. Look where distributer rotor is pointing and match with distributer cap. That will give you #1 lead position. Follow around cap in rotor direction and you will get the rest.
6 cylinder normally 123456. same story.
if you still have the old leads, they are sometimes marked and normally different lengths. if you lucky, and replace them, you can sometimes pick up which went where by the bends left in them over time. Then start again and mark them. I normally replace leads one at a time. Safer and easier. Or Photograph them with cell.

My 1987 toyata camry would not start, it had no spark, mechanic thinks it's the distributer, but it is running again. could it last a while without getting a new distributer

its probably the ignition module in the distributor, can be intermittent,or stop when hot, sometimes module is intergrated into distributor so it may come as 1 unit, fairly common wont fix itself
