1996 Oldsmobile Achieva: Security light flashes upon startup

1996 Oldmobile Achieva, Ongoing issue: Security light FLASHES upon start up and car stops running. Gas is restricted from the injectors. (When I can get it to start, it runs fine. While running, security light is on SOLID sometimes and OFF other times. Only presents a problem on startup when FLASHING. For about a month it took several tries to start sometimes but would eventually start. Last night it refused to start at all, even after leaving key engaged and turned to "run" position for 20 minutes in an attempt to "reset" the computer (read this on a web site). Even tried disconneting the yellow wire from the ignition assembly under the column (read this on a website too) and this did not solve the problem. Engine will turn over but will not stay running (no gas to injectors) because light continues to flash.

Here is what you do, but only when the SECURITY light flashes - if it is always ON or OFF it's no use.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes ( SECURITY light will flash for 10 minutes and then stay on SOLID)
Turn the key to OFF
Wait 5 seconds.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes.
Turn the key to OFF
Wait 5 seconds.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes.
Turn the ignition OFF.

Start the car normally.
It has relearnt the keycode and you're good to go.
NOTICE - it takes 30 minutes to relearn, that's THREE cycles of ON - 10 minutes - OFF.

Good luck.

Hi! This also one of the General Motors that may have a anti-theft transceiver that reads the key as you place it in the ignition lock cylinder, in most cases the wires to the transceiver get frayed and the anti-theft module can't read the key! You would need to perform a few tests that would have to be done by a skilled tech. Not exactly a solution but maybe start!

Won't start security light comes on and flashes for about 20-30 mins till solid then will restart. recently started having no lights come on for up to 1 hr or more and have left overnight.

Try a different key
Usually the security light and no start mean the system can't read the little black chip imbedded in the base of the key

Ignition keeps going into security car starts then stalls and security idiot light flashes

ignition switch problems on these cars are notorious, you can bypass the anti-theft module by placing a resistor inline so that the module 'thinks' the correct key is not an attempt to steal the car. the anti theft is located behind the glovebox and the resistor costs 15 cents at radio shack, not as hard to do as it sounds and it fixes it for good.

The car fires but stops immediately

I had a problem with a 97 Achieva recently.Someone else replaced the PCM/ignition switch and passlock sensor.I replaced the ICP.Engine would turn over but wouldn't start and the security lamp was dim and flashing and then it would go solid.I tried the wait 10 minutes thing but,the light would never go off! I put the original passlock sensor back onto the lock cylinder. But this is what fixed the problem.I cleaned the contacts on the black wires and green on the ignition switch with tv tuner cleaner! After I cleaned those contacts the security light was flashing brightly. So I turned the key to run and left it there. After a few minutes it stayed on solid.I waited about 10 minutes but the light never went out.So I turned off the switch and then tried starting. It started right up and the security lamp flashed and then went off.Has started every time since.Note:I also scraped the pins that I cleaned with the cleaner with a knife.

1996 Olds Achieva: Security light flashes upon startup

Several GM products, including the Chevrolet Impala and Malibu, the Oldsmobile Alero, the Pontiac Grand Prix, and Saturn Ion, have issues with the Security light coming on. This is many times an indication of a failing Body Control Module (BCM). Initially, the Security light will come on then go off, progressing to a constant on light, before the car will refuse to start. Other symptoms may include erratic action of electronics, a clicking sound coming from the glove box, and the air conditioning failing to blow cold air. I recommend a shop that specializes in the electronic systems of vehicles to diagnosis and make the necessary repairs. They should keep the car until they replicate the symptoms described. A new BCM from GM should cost about $230; plan on another $200 for them to diagnose the problem, replace the unit, and program the new unit. The dealers quote between $700 and $1,100 for the same repair. My experience and the experiences I have read on the internet, indicate the new BCM should last only about a year.

My 96 Oldsmobile decided not to stay running anymore,

Check the Fuel Filter and Fuel Pump. Also Check under the Hood and Look for a Fuse Relay Box. Inside this Box there should be a Relay for the Starter and Fuel Pump and Crank, Also after Replacing these Take a Flashlight and Check ALL the Fuses Really good in the Box under the Hood and the one Under the Dash on the Inside.. Replace these and let me Know how it goes.

Security System

You need to go to autozone or advance and do an obd2 scan. This will give you codes so you can plot your next course of action. It will tell you if a sensor or something else is faulty

Security light flashes car wont start

You need to go to GM and find out what defective part is causing this, the most common is the sensor in the ignition lock cylinder fails, then when you try to start it doesn't send a usable signal from the key chip to the electronic module that controls the security system and it locks you out.
