I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee, and the brake warning light comes on at ignition, and stays on. What could be causing this?

omg what country, and which lamp there is not just one lamp.
"brake indicator used for vehicles manufactured
for the United States consists of the word
"BRAKE" imprinted on a red lens"
and
The Rest-Of-World
(ROW) market version of this indicator has two
International Control and Display Symbol icons
imprinted on the red lens; one is the icon for "Brake
Failure", and the other is the icon for "Parking
Brake".

why not read the manual first, or is guessing how it works fun?

posted it like 300 times now.
again, on one RED BRAKE warning lamp. (not ABS)
WJ jeep 99-04
see brakes chapter 3 covers it all.
the diffr pressure valve sets the red brake light on

"The parking brake switch is in circuit with the red
warning lamp in the dash.
The switch will cause the
lamp to illuminate only when the parking brakes are
applied. If the lamp remains on after parking brake
release, the switch or wires are faulty.
If the red lamp comes on a fault has occurred in
the front or rear brake hydraulic system.
If the red warning lamp and yellow warning lamp
come on, the electronic brake distribution may be at
fault.
In most cases, the actual cause of an improperly
functioning parking brake (too loose/too tight/won't
hold), can be traced to a parking brake component."
so unplug it to see that its not CAUSE.

parting shot, i make sure all red lamp devices are unplugged
1 by 1 to know which one is tripping, the lamp.
then after bleeded, I step on the brake pedal real hard.
100lbs or more
and this will centralize the DIFF VALVE NOW>
if not the brakes have air in the system.
or the DIFF VALVE is seized.
they can stick so, learn the MONSTER FOOT brake test./
use max brake pedal pressure now.

there is a parking lamp too. that glows and will warn of low fluid levels.
are you working on the car with no scan tool?
is yes, then you miss out on all those brake error DTCs
dont you... and work totally blind

Brake light on dash staying on. Released nuts on hand brake but doesn't go away.

The BRAKE warning light on many cars is also a warning light for error conditions with the brake system. You did not specify the YEAR, MAKE, MODEL or ENGINE of your vehicle, so I can only guess that the BRAKE light is warning you of either excessive wear on one or more of your brake rotors, or of lack of pressure or fluid in the system. I would strongly recommend that you do not drive the vehicle until you have the brake system examined, as you may lose brakes entirely.

Brake light and atl light stays on

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS, TPMS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

On my 2008 ford escape, there is a light on my dashboard that keeps coming on. it looks like a box with an exclamation mark in the middle. i dont know what that means. im wondering if i need a tune up or...

Brake warning light.

If the light is on all the time, it could mean you simply forgot to release the parking (emergency) brake. The brake warning light remains on when the brake is set as a reminder. If the brake warning light remains on when the parking brake is released, then something is amiss.
In some cases, the brake warning light may remain on if the switch on the parking brake pedal or lever is misadjusted. Nothing is wrong with the brakes and a simple adjustment should fix the problem.
If the brake warning light comes on when you apply the brakes, or is on continuously, it means that hydraulic pressure has been lost in one side of the brake system or that the fluid level in the master cylinder is dangerously low (due to a leak somewhere in the brake system). In either case, the fluid level in the master cylinder should be checked. Adding brake fluid to the master cylinder reservoir may temporarily solve the problem. But if there's a leak, the new fluid will soon be lost and the warning light will come back on.

along with warning that the e-brake is engaged, it's also a waning light that something is wrong with the brake system. however, it may be a defective switch on the e-brake handle. i would have a break check done. also chech the fluid level.

The brake fliud resorvoir may have a sensor on it that is at fault. Also if the brake pads are getting very tin the light will stay on for the brake fluid is low if not filled. Fill the fluid up and see if the light goes off. The sensor if equipt will have two wires for a conection

My brake light stays on in the dash

Typically, worn brake pads won't cause the warning light to come on. Some vehicles have a brake fluid sensor that can cause the light to come on. Also make sure the parking brake is completely releasing and if you have ABS, make sure everything is working there.
Uneven brake pressure will certainly cause the brake light to come on, that's when the master cylinder is working a lot harder for one circuit (front or back) than it is for the other, indicating either low brake fluid level or damaged/worn wheel cylinders.
If you can't find anything by examining the brakes, you may need to pay for a scan of the ABS computer.

I.P Brake light is staying on.. what does this mean

Hi,

Offhand, the brake light warning on most dashboards would indicate that the hand/emergency brake is engaged. If even when the hand/emergency brake is disengaged or is in normal position and the light is still lit, it could indicate that:
  • the brake fluid in the reservoir is below minimum level;
  • and possibly the brake shoes/pads need replacement.
Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.
