Your battery could be going bad. Another thing you can check is the current draw when the system is shut off. To do that remove the positive terminal, and use an amp meter touching the positive to the battery cable and the negative to the positive post on the battery and take a reading. Its usually just 1 amp or less.

What possible way can check to tell if my overnight battery drain is due to the diode sticking? Is there a test or a tip you could offer? The battery is new and the alternator tested ok.

A diode doesn't "stick". Either one of your circuits is using battery overnight, the battery is defective, or it's not charging.

Assuming the battery is "good", pull all of the fuses overnight. If it's good in the morning, put all the fuses back in, and next night leave one in. Next night, the next fuse, etc.

Once you know which circuit is draining your battery, you can troubleshoot further.

My 1994 Subaru SVX was having issues starting. We fixed the relay, and reworked some wiring issues. Now it starts, but the battery drains rapidly. I believe it to be the fault of the Theft Security System....

Rapid draining is usually caused by a shorted diode in the alternator. Disconnect it and see if the drain stops. The theft system would cause a much smaller drain and take overnight. But here's the way to track down a battery drain.

1997 ford contour- battery sometimes drains overnight. car runs ok at low speeds but loses power at higher speeds. after pulling over for a few minutes and idling, its ok to run about 65mph for about 2...

These are 2 different issues. When the vehicle starts to slow at high speed, remove the gas cap and see what happens, if the issue goes away, replace the gas cap and check the gas tank vent. If it does not go away, check the catalytic converter to see if it is plugged. The issue with the draining battery has to be tested by hooking a meter in series with one battery post and set it to measure AMPS. With the car off and the dome light disabled, check to see what the reading is, then start pulling fuses one at a time till you find the one that makes the biggest drop in the meter reading.

What kind if mechanic can not figure out a starting problem? He may need a career change. Your best bet ,sorry to say, is find a capable repair facility and get the ground rules set from the start, as to what they are capable of troubleshooting and be prepared to pay for their time, as you already know, or you would have solved this youself. I know it is 1998 but these issues take time to solve and involve knowledge of reading electrical schematics and have electrical and electronic knowledge also. That does not exist in the auto repair business and they can not spend all day figuring it out because they know you won't pay for their learning curve.

My A/C stopped working about a month ago ... I had it checked and charged but it stopped blowing cold the next day. The mechanic tells me today that I have a bad seal on the compressor but I also know...

Ok.. there's plenty of causes of AC systems bleeding out, and the mechanic could be right... it's not UNcommon for the compressor input shaft seal to be leaking on aging vehicles.... especially those with 107,000 miles. Your call.

Check engine light on

The new sealed batteries fail without any warning, drive to the store, come back out the battery is dead, the other issues you have are caused by low system voltage, replace the battery and all should be well.
