If the emergency brake cable goes on to the caliper, the caliper piston has to be twisted clockwise and pushed at the same time to get them to go in. the do make a tool to do this. you my also rent it at autozone.

SOURCE: remove the rear brake drum on 2004 Dodge Caraven

No just make sure your emergency cable is off and take a large hammer an hit it around the edge or corner lightly and spin at the same time also try pulling with your other hand as you spin this is a technique all mechanics use its very unlikely that you will have to loosen up the shoes with a brake spoon.REMEMBER THE OUTER ROUNDED EDGE ONLY WHERE ITS THE THICKIST.

SOURCE: 2006 Grand Caravan: Can't get pcv valve from a 3.8 dodge grand caravan...

I just replaced mine and had the same problem. If you look at the new one, you should find a small hole at the base of the metal tube. Using a mirror, I located the same hole in the one in the valve cover and inserted a pointed awl into it and was able to pry it out. Do it slowly since you are prying against plastic. When inserting the new one, I found that it should not be inserted as far the original one was and has a gentle snap.

Retract the caliper piston on 2008 rear brakes

You need to retract the parking brake adjuster. Look for a plug on the back of the caliper. It is a seal plug. Don't loose the seal on the plug. Usually there is an allen screw under the plug. back this off to retract the caliper.

Can't get piston to retract on rear brakes

You need a caliper piston tool. Auto zone let me borrow one when I bought my brake pads from them. You use the tool along with your ratchet to turn the mechanism that compresses the caliper piston so that you can get the new pads in. Worked great for me on my 2008 caravan.

How do you get the rear brake caliper piston to retract so you can change brake pads

It depends what type of Caliper Piston it is, if it has two grooves in it that criss cross like a X, those pistons have to be turned clockwise with a special tool or you can use a small screwdriver or I use the complete side of a small Vise grip that will fit inside the groove to turn the piston clockwise until it fully retracts into the caliper. The other type of Piston that has no special marks, you can use a C-Clamp and just put it on the Piston and tighten the clamp until the Piston fully retracts back into the caliper.

Any special tools needed to replace rear disc brakes on a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am GT?

Yes. Rear disk brakes on all cars requires turning the piston while retracting.
There is always some sort of notches or holes allowing for some sort of tool to do this.
But you can always improvise something.
Or you can buy a universal kit for this from Harbor Freight.

Compressing the rear disc brake caliper on 2008 grand caravan

The rear calipers on these models require a special tool that compresses and turns the piston in at the same time -- most parts stores carry this tool.

It is called a caliper piston press -- and it installs where the pads would go and acts like a c-clamp,when turning handle it will turn the caliper piston backinto the caliper as it compresses it.
Anytime the brake rotor or brake pads are being replaced, the rear caliper piston must be seated (bottomed) to compensate for the new brake rotor or lining. Because the Parking Brake self-adjuster mechanism is attached to the piston, a special seating method is required. The only acceptable method is by rotating the piston back into the bore using Retractor,MILLER Special Tool 8807, . Any other seating method will damage the self-adjuster mechanism.
Good luck and hope this helps.

2008 grand caravan rear brakes

Older vehicles with caliper parking brakes rotated their pistons in a ratchet effect. To retract those they needed to be pushed in and rotated at the same time.I cannot stand rear disc brakes.Seems they fail way too often.GM had that issue with its W body cars (1987-up),pads would wear to steel in 6 months or less. Did the face of the piston have 2 or 4 square/rectangular/round holes in it? There is a tool to hook onto a ratchet to let you turn and push the piston back in. If you banged it in, the system may not work correctly.
Go and rent the Caliper Brake Kit from Auto Zone, it make your brake job way easier. This tool compresses the piston while it rotates clockwise. So if you are going to do your own rear brake job get this tool or something similar.
Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, Recap: The cylinder does not compress on the rears, it screws back in. A special tool for rear calipers works best but a pair of needle nose pliers will do in a pinch.

How do I retract the rear brake caliper piston

usually with a special tool you can borrow at autozone. because the rear brakes are usually the parking brake. you have to screw them back in. if there is a cross pattern or some type of groove in the piston will confirm this.
