It should be the lower smooth pulley that the back of the belt rubs against. Torque it toward the front of the vehicle and it should relieve the tension on the belt for removal. Remember how it's routed or make a sketch so that you can easily install the new. The pulley will actually move instead of removal.

I need a diagram to see were my tension-er is

I don't have the figure for your car, but the below figure shows how to remove the A/C belt.
the other belts should have a simple slot in the bracket for adjusting. If you have more questions, let us know.

3.0L SOHC Diamante
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the lockbolt on the face of the A/C tensioner pulley.
  3. Turn the adjusting bolt of the A/C tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the A/C belt.
  4. Remove the A/C compressor belt.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the face of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley.
  6. Turn the adjusting bolt of the tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the belt.
  7. Remove the power steering/alternator belt.
To install:
  1. Install the power steering/alternator belt first and then the A/C compressor drive belt.
  2. Adjust the belts to the proper tension by turning the adjusting bolts and tighten pulley fixing nut/bolt.
  3. Tighten the mounting nut of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

NOTE The manufacturer does not provide a torque specification for the bolt that secures A/C tensioner pulley.
  1. Connect the negative battery cable.

98 plymouth voyager power steering belt

See diagram

The triangular-mounted AC belt must come off first.
At the top pulley is a small bracket and hex screw. This is a jackscrew, which when loosened, will lower the top pulley and the belt will become slack. If jackscrew become detached from pulley, just raise pulley by hand to reconnect, and tighten screw to re-thread.
The larger serpentine belt is loosened by performing a Righty-Tighty to the tensionner pulley. The belt will easily slip off all pulleys. Be sure to follow diagram to install new belts. Remove plastic shield under engine for access to lowest pulleys. I recommend tying up belt above top pulley, threading around everything except tensioner, then untying & position belt over tensionner.

I have a 2003 rav4 v4 and I'm replacing the serpentine belt. What do I loosen to remove the old belt and install new?

Look for a tensioner pulley. It's spring loaded to maintain tension on the belt. It's a pulley that does not spin a device like alternator, power steering pump or AC compressor. If you put a wrench on it and push it one way or another you can overcome the spring tension and the belt will just pop off. Check the belt routing diagram under the hood when you reinstall a new belt. It should identify the tensioner pulley, sometimes known as an idler pulley.

Ineed to replace the serpintine belt, mine shreded, went and purchased replacement from lordco auto parts, could not seem to get belt to tighten up could you please advise the correct belt part # as well...

There is a idler wheel that has a bolt that when loosened will cause it to spring back. As you lay under the car with your feet first inward ( looking straight up from under vehicle snake the belt through and over the pulleys then pry back with a long pry bar the idler pulley lever after loosening bolt on wheel or lever as you put the belt over the pulleys. I have done this belt on a 1999 528 i it is a unpleasant job without a diagram showing the serpentine pulley arrangement, there is a second idler pulley located slightly higher than the release locking idler pulley don't confuse the two, I would advise aquiring a serpentine belt diagram (cd repair manual on ebay motors) unless you are confident you can figure it out through trial and error.

How do I change the 3 belts on a 98 civic?

Below is a diagram of the drive belts. You can see the adjusting bolt. Loosen the bolt to release tension on the pulleys to enable you to slip the new belt(s) on. Once on, apply pressure to tighten the belts while tightening the adjusting bolt. Best of luck.

Serpantine belt broke

there is usally a diagram on either the hood or the radiator core support. now to loosen something there is a idler pulley with a 3/8" drive end in the center of it that will allow you to move the pulley against the tensioner to put the belt on
