It sounds like you do have a transmission problem, it is possible that the torque converter is at fault. I would suggest you take it to a dealer that does specialize in transmissions.
Was the clutch acting up/slipping prior to it not working as of now? Does the clutch pedal feel normal? With clutch pedal up and no engagement, possible clutch failure/transmission input shaft failure/transmission internal problem
When you changed the compressor, did you recharge the AC system? If the pressure switches are not actuated by the correct pressure, the system will not engage the clutch. To charge the system you have to pump a vacuum on the system for about an hour. Follow the new compressor instructions as to the amount of oil that may be in it and how much the system calls for. See it has the correct type oil and the correct amount, then charge with the correct refridgerant and the correct amount.
CHECK CLUTCH CABLE! IF CABLES IS LOOSE YOU COULD HARDLY ENGAGE 1ST AND 2ND GEAR. IF YOUR CAR IS USING CLUTCH CABLE, ADJUST IT IF IT USES FLUID, CHECK THE RUBBER CAPS.
