Might check drive axles just to make sure one has not broken a cv joint.

SOURCE: 1997 cadillac deville engine is overheating.

When you say thermagasket kit,I assume you mean one of those silly DIY gasket sealant liquids that you put in the engine.

You should not use these type of products on ANY engine let alone the Northstar.

To cure a headgasket leak, replace the headgasket.....there is no miracle cure.

On the Northstar, you will damage the cooling system, plus you will continue to have issues as time goes on.

How do you know you have a blown head gasket?

Here is something to consider.......

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

Also note that the cooling fans don't come on until the coolant temperature hits around 225 degrees.
During normal highway driving the fans will very rarely come on(if at all) due to constant air flow through the radiator. They will only usually come on in heavy traffic conditions on a hot day.
But......if you have the Air Con switched on, the fans will run all of the time.

Have a 2000 cadillac deville with north star engine. Had oil leaks fixed back in 2009 and no leaks of any kind since but it uses oil like crazy to me and it smells like oil when you start it up and drive...

First, your oil consumption could possibly be a bad PCV Valve if it sticks open, it will **** oil out and pass through air filter, engine and out through exhaust w/little or no smoke. The whining noise sounds like a vac leak, check all small vac lines in and around intake manifold. A vac leak could also be contributing to your oil consumption problem.

1994 Cadillac Deville - won't shift into reverse after sitting overnight or for a couple of hours. Will shift into 1st and then will shift into reverse. What is causing this?

Check the transmission fluid level, reverse needs twice the pressure to activate that drive does. If low refill and try again. If fluid good, I`d say the tranny 3rd reverse clutch is worn out. Recheck the condition of the fluid on the dipstick, if it appears burnt or very dirty I`d still suspect internal tranny clutch issues. It also has a low reverse clutch, but goes into 1st gear as you said.

1996 Cadillac Deville not shifting into drive or top gear. Also starts in second. Traction control button doesn't change anything. Flushed fluid but no change.

change shift solinoids. located in transmission pan. 4.6l north star has a 4t80e tranny. remove bolts holding pan drop pan . now disconnect the shift solinoids thair are 2 u should see several bolts around 20 bolts holdong the valve body to the transmission unscrew thees bolts . ( 10MM) before removing all bolts disconnect the hook with a clip going to the valve body.its located to a spring and lever. now remove rest of bolts. DO NOT LET IT FALL DOWN. remove the connector going to manifold pressure sensor. use a flat head screw driver to pull clips holding the solinoids in place. thair should be a small **** located on the other side of throdle body. DO NOT REMOVE ALL THE BOLTS OUT OF THE BODY. THAIR ARE BALL BERINGS INSIDE THAT WILL FALL OUT OF PLACE. the screen is located in between the shift solinoids. DO NOT DO THIS JOB WITHOUT ALREADY HAVING THE REPLACMENT PARTS ON HAND. when putting every thang back together i would check the wiring harness for anny shorts .
