We are having issues with our obdii connector. It will not connect to the state computer for inspection (we have tried a few different places).

We have a hand held reader which it occasionally connects to, but sometimes when it does connect it resets the clock on the radio. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

IT IS A COMPUTER. YOU WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE IT TO SEE IF THAT RESOLVES IT THEY RUN ABOUT $40.00 FROM A JUNK YARD. RECOMMEND YOU TAKE IT TO A DEALERSHIP AND HAVE THEM DO A DIAG ON IT. THEN YOU WILL KNOW. THEY ARE A PAIN WHEN THEY START GOING OUT. GOOD LUCK.

Most connection issues ( no communication ) are the result of no power supply at the connector. Does your hand held unit light up when plugged in to the connector? You may have a blown fuse. Do all the power outlets ( Cigarrette lighter etc ) work? GM tends to put the OBD plug power on the same fuse as the power outlets. If one or more outlets are not working, check for a blown 20amp fuse in the underhood fuse/relay center

Testimonial: "yes the hand held will always light up it just does not always connect. and yes the power outlets all work and the fuse(15amp) which is under the hood is fine"

When you say doesn't connnect..... you are reffering to a no communication data display issue? Does your scan tool or any other scan tool come up with a no communication message?

  • Anonymous Jul 01, 2015

it wont communicate with the state computer at all, and the hand held will always light up but does not always communicate with it

Have a look at the plug and make sure none of the pins are pushed back or spread apart too much. The class2 serial data should be the purple wire on the back of the plug that supplies info to the scan tool. If the scan tools are lighting up but not communicating I would suspect power and ground supplies to be good. You will have to determine whether the ECM is the problem (not common )or a wiring issue. You will have to check the purple wire from the plug to the ECM with an ohm meter for opens/high resistance. Not sure what connector this wire is located in at the Ecm. You can inspect the plugs at the ECM as well for signs of corrossion/water intrusion as well as for any damaged pins. Sometimes just disconnecting the plugs at the ECM and reconnecting them can correct this type of issue. (make sure key is off when doing this procedure). Also, wiggling the wire harness as it enters the vehicle at the firewall and in any other location you can wiggle it may help find/correct your problem. Hope this helps

Erm... sorry... where's the OBDC connection?

Ah! ODBC... completely different concept from OBDII, no database involved. 8) 8) 8)

You're looking for the OBD or OBDII connector. It's guaranteed to be within 36" of the steering wheel, under the dashboard. In my experience, it's nearly always VERY CLOSE to the steering column under the dash... like within 12". It looks a lot like a smaller version of the Centronics connector (if you remember that), a little like a D-sub connector.

Note that it MAY be hidden behind a plastic panel, but the panel should not require any tools to remove - it should be hand-removable.

Obd not communicating with state inspection equipment 2006 chevy malabu

most common cause for this is the fuse that powers the OBDII connector is also on the accessory or cigar lighter fuse circuit and loses power when that fuse blows

I took for a smog check and the guy plugged in his computer and said it wouldnt read it

europeon import software no doubt,no europeon vehicle or very few can be read via the OBDII your inspector should put a probe up the exhaust to measure the emmisions not plug into the OBDII as connecting up to certain cars with a code reader will render the vehicle in a non start immobilised state that only a dealer can sort out as this is deemed to be illegal access to the OBDII where someone could be trying to by-pass the immobilisor via the OBDII .

My 1999 golf 4 1.6 se engine is bad, can i replace it with a 2.0 engine

It will fit physically, but would be fairly complicated as you would have to also replace all the harnesses and electronic conponents, and you might have an issue with emission laws in your state since the OBDII connector will provide different information than what is expected on inspection. IMO you should look for the same engine, it would make the swap much easier.

What road blocks will I have putting a 1993 1.0 L geo metro engine and ecm into a 1997 geo metro?

I don't know if it will physically bolt in or much about either motor really. However, most states have an emissions inspection that requires hooking a computer up to the OBDII connector. Installing an OBDI engine and ecm into an OBDII car won't allow you to pass inspection and is technically illegal. The other way around, would be fine as far as inspection anyway.

Dead OBD connector on 2000 Isuzu Rodeo

The only reason I have ever seen for a dead OBDII or DCL while the car still runs is that the ECM has failed and for some reason just marginally functioning enough to appear normal. This is more common than one would think.

I would start by getting even a generic OBDII reader to confirm your work, then pull the battery connections and unplug the ECM from the harness and make sure visually that the conector has no obvious issues then reassemble and retest.

Emmision test failed?

It is possible that the scan tool that the shops are using, is powered independently from the OBD11 connector, but the testing station relies on the connector for power and if the fuse for it is blown, they get no data and you fail.
I've attached a picture of the connector and where you should see 12 volts. Get a test light and check this pin, if you have no power between this pin and ground, you either have a blown fuse or a wiring problem5243d31.jpg
