Assuming that you have an AWD auto, if you look under the bonnet on the drivers side (RHS), between the windscreen bulkhead and the top of the suspension stru you will find a fuse holder, if you put a fuse in there, eg 10amps, it will disable the rear wheel drive, ONLY for front end lift towing.
Hope this helps

You probably aren't as these transmissions will automatically go into 4 wheel drive via a viscous coupling inside the transmission that detects wheel slip .

Why is there no drive to my rear wheels in my Subaru AWD?

IT is a constant all wheel drive car which means that all 4 wheels are driven all of the time . There is a differential in the centre that allows for different speeds between front and back while driving such as going over bumps . When you engage the 4wd button you are in effect locking that centre diff so that both front and rear axles drive together. If you have it so that 4wd is not engaged (selected ) and there is no drive action to the rear wheels that then indicates that the shaft in that centre diff is not connected in the side gears ( stripped /broken) and it has been in 4wd all the time so that it could be sold

Why is there no drive to the rear wheels of my Subaru?

I think you will find it uses similar systems to the Free Lander and rear wheel drive only kicks in when one or both of the front wheels lose traction.

2005 blazer won't shift out of 4WD

put in reverse get going 5-10 mph put in neutral then try to get out of FWD while still in motion. This doesn't always work but it eliminates
a lot of possibilities.

4wd 1996 subaru how do i activate or engage 4wd

All Subies are AWD 24/7
There is a towing fuse located under the hood. If it is missing (or blown) - the vehicle will only be FWD (for instances you need to tow).
Check the fuse is in place and good.

Consult your owner's manual for the location... (usually passenger side firewall.

Thanks!

02 Legacy Wagon, When I accelerate. it makes a tapping noisenear the rear of car. when I let off gas or turn and shift the weight of the car it stops. I disconnected the AWD and it stopped. Could it be a...

Well, you have made our job easy with this one and very much diagnosed the car all by yourslef,, you are absolutely correct...it definetly sounds like a rear diff problem, and it is ok to drive with FWD only and have the rear unlocked..........just keep an eye on it that you dont start hearing other noises....as worst case scenario, it could be gear related and even though it is not locked in AWD, the gears/shafts are still turning.......so as long as it stays quiet in FWD, you should have no probs until you have the time/money to have it fixed...no 4WD adventures though

Hello. Replacing the clutch in a 4WD is a pretty big job. Dealerships charge it as a ten hour job. It could take from 8-12. Joe

Can u leve n 4wd all tha time,or do i have to change back to fwd

It is not recomended to run like that all the time. It is really just for towing. If it seems to be running better I would suspect that either the rear or the viscous is in need of attention. Hope this helps and have a good day.
