1998 Mercury Tracer. How do you remove the fuel pump from the fuel tank? I've removed the back seat and entered through the access panel. I've disconnected the wire harness, fuel line and remove the circle ring over the pump cover. Now I thought the pump should come right out, but its not moving.

Re: How do you remove the fuel pump from the fuel
Only two things it can be. one would be that the ground strap is still atached, the other thing is the gasket under the pump has welded the two together. in this case, if your sure you have the retaining ring all the way loose, tap pump with a brass hammer(only!) then work it loose. good luck.

Sounds like you have a weak fuel pump or a bad fuel pump relay which is a cheap test before you change the pump. You may be able to access the fuel pump through the floor under the rear seat so look at that first before you pull the fuel tank out of your car.
FUEL PUMP IS IN GAS TANK THE 1.8 ENGINES YOU CAN ACCESS FUEL PUMP BY REMOVING THE REAR SEAT AND THE ACCESS PANEL.THE 3.5 ENGINE YOU CAN REMOVE REAR SEAT CUSHION AND ACCESS PANEL FROM FLOOR TO REMOVE FUEL PUMP.THE 2.5 AND 3.2 ENGINE REMOVE FUEL PUMP FROM TRUNK FLOOR.AND THE 2.3 AND 3.0 ENGINES FUEL TANK HAS BE LOWER BEFORE YOU CAN REMOVE FUEL PUMP.
If there is a access panel to the tank then yes, If not then the tank has to be dropted. If there is an access panel then it is under the back seat or under the carpet somewhere in the back of the car. Look under the car to see where the fuel tank is ,then look in the car above the tank. When removing the pump be carefull not to bend the fuel gauge float falve.Good luck
you better KNOW its bad... before you replace it, because its a big job, and they wont take it back after you installed it. the gas tank will have to be removed. after you have verified that the pump has power and ground, and it still does not operate THEN it will need replacement.
You can access the fuel pump one of 2 ways. dropping the tank, or if your lucky, you may be able to get to it from the trunk, or under the back seat. You are looking for a round plastic access panel under the carpeting in the trunk or the seat.
remove rear seat, remove round metal cover, disconnect fuel lines and wires from top of fuel pump, jack up rear of car. remove gas tank straps, lower gas tank with a jack, install is reverse.....if you need to just replace the fuel pump you don't have to remove tank you Can access from under rear seat good luck and please rate -jeff
