Hi, I have the same problem with the mini. What you can try is to get a preson to help. Tell them to stand back of the mini and to be ready to push the opening button on the trunk. Now you go inside and you need to go under the backseat. There is a ring under and in middle of the seat, quite close to the edge. With one hand you have to try to raise the seat and with other reach underneath for the ring. If you find the ring, pull on it and ask the other person to spam the opening button. Also pushing down on the trunck and pushing the button the same time. If this does not help. Lock yourself inside the car and spam lock/unlock doors and other person to be at the back and spam on the trunck button.

Where this problem comes from: The computer sometimes does not register that the trunk is closed so it has not enabled the button to release the lock. You can also fix this by opening the trunk button and cleaning the switch contacts with some contact cleaning sprays.

Let me know if you get it open. I have tried many things.

Recently I got it open by pushing down on the trunk hard and same time pushing the button. Sometimes it registers and opens the trunk.

Has the car ever been hit from behind? Has the car ever had any work done on the boot? Does the lock sound like it's doing anything? Have you tried using the key? Have you tried the manual release under the back seat? Information like this really helps diagnose what the problem can be. It sounds like the actuator is disconnected from the lock mechanism; or it could be the power line going back to the lock has been disconnected or damaged; but the only way to find out is get it open and remove the inside panel so you can inspect the lock. Once you can see what it's doing fixing it should be easy.

You have water ingress into boot release microswitch, pretty common failure. Easy to replace. remove the rubber boot just now to let the water out.
