Question about 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis

2 Answers

89 grand marquis w/5.0 efi and 94,000 mi. was cutting in and out under half throttle load. It got worse to the point where it could not get up to 30mph. When you push on the accelerator it would just stall out. It did this twice and then it just would not start again and it had to be towed. It has spark and it seems to have fuel. The way I checked was by putting a pressure gauge on the fuel rail and the reading was 22lbs. after the key was turned on and the fuel pump primed. Still no start. Can someone help?

Have you checked the timing to make sure it is still on. It sounds like it may have jumped if you are having such a hard time getting it running and driving it. It should be time to replace it.

THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS CAR IS THE IGNITION MODULE AND THE DISTRIBUTOR STATOR, TO REPLACE BOTH HAVE THE DISTRIBUTOR PULLED REPLACE THE STATOR WHICH IS LOCATED INSIDE THE DISTRIBUTOR AND REPLACE THE IGNITION MODULE WHICH IS THE PLASTIC MODULE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE DISTRIBUTOR, ALSO CHECK THE IGNITION COIL TOWER FOR A WHITE POWER UNDER THE COIL LEAD, IF PRESENT REPLACE THE COIL AND THE COIL HI TENSION LEAD TO THE DISTRIBUTOR.

Why do my 93 grand Marquis lose power and cut off when I put the car in drive

Do this service.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

I have misplaced my owners manual for my 2008 Mercury Marquis. I don"t know when to have car serviced

Hello fellow Grand Marquis owner...

Here is Ford's webpage for the 2008 Maquis manual, scheduled maintenance, and other owner information:

http://owner.ford.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Owner/Page/OwnerGuidePage&year=2008&make=Mercury&model=Grand%20Marquis

Click on that link (or cut and paste it into your web browser's address bar) and click on the 'Scheduled Maintenance Guide' . This will open a .pdf file for you.

If you need this information again, go to Google and search for '2008 Mercury Grand Marquis manual'. Click on the link that contains 'owner.ford.com' in the address.

You have a very nice car, I hope that you enjoy it for years to come.

Good luck from Detroit, MI.

Is there a fuse for the fuel pump 92 grand marquis

Hello fellow Grand Marquis owner...

Yes, there is a fuse, relay and an inertia shut-off that all affect power to the fuel pump.

The fuse for the fuel pump is in the power distribution box, under the hood. Fuse #8, a 20 amp fuse that also protects the electronic engine control relay. This fuse box is immediately behind the battery.

The fuel pump relay is immediately behind the power steering resevoir on the left side of the engine compartment. It's under a cover that houses three relays. Look for the words, 'FUEL PUMP RELAY'
on the plastic cover and carefully lift to check the relay, if necessary.

Check that the inertia switch didn't go off from a pothole or other jolt to the car. It's in the trunk, on the left side, above a yellow warning label with instructions. The reset button is pointing upward through a hole in the fuzzy gray trunk carpet material.

Good luck from Detroit, MI.

Can I clean my Maf sensor and throttle body myself on a 2000 pontiac grand prix GTP? What are the steps? Is it necessary on 94,000 miles.

Yes it will help car run better. Take off any hose that goes to card so that you can see down throttle bore. Start car. Grab throttle linkage and figure out how to move it so that you can make the engine go faster. Begine to spray inside throttle body using little red hose that came with carb cleaner. While you are spraying the engine will try to cut out move the throttle linkage to speed up the engine so it won't cut out. Keep spraying all around inside and outside throttle bore.
