Uncontrollable shimmy in frontend

I have a 1998 jeep grand cherokee and we've recently rotated the tires and put new shocks on the front. To see if this would stop the front end from shaking feriously when hitting a bump or dip in the road. It shakes so bad that u almost have to come to a complete stop before u wreck or before it stops shaking. HELP!!!

First, have you had an accident where the front end was involved. Second, it your wheel bearings could be shot. Third, do you have a steering stabilizer on the front end? It looks like a shock absorber that is mounted sideways (horizontal)? Last....ball joints or tie rod damage. Take a look at these things first before replacing any. Jack the front end up so the tires are off the ground and give them a twist/pull motion. You should have nearly no play in them. Ball joint are easy to check. Look for torn boots or if they are bent. Tie rods...they are the linkage that has small joints on them to your control arms. See if any of them are bent. Last question, does it feel like the vibration is right under the seats, i.e., the passenger, driver's seat, or the middle of the floor.....or just from the front end/engine area?

Haha the death wobble replace the steering dampner or shock on the lower tortion bar of the suspension with an heavy duty upgraded one. Not a difficult repair check the tortion bar bushing for play. But the death wobble is caused by the steering shock. Seen it a lot fixes it every time. Hope the info helps rate it please.

Check your ball joints. also, if the tires are somewhat worn many times they won't have enough rotating mass to overcome side harmonics and can shake but most oftern the joints are worn. No play is acceptable there.

Check the front stabilizer bar and the bushings on it. It is located under the radiator with arms that bend back to each front tire.

I would check and see if your lug nuts are all tight before I drove it again. Lug nut should be check within the first 50 miles after a tire removal. But your right, could just be a loose shock, or your spare tire, if it is hung under the rear of your vehicle.

I would say that you have WARPED DISC BRAKE ROTORS which is the beginning and possibly all of your problem. It he suspension such as STRUTS are weak, that will elevate the problem. Hope this helps.
