Check your brake lights, do they work, if not the system will not sense the brake lights are on and will lock out park. This is called the Park lock safety system.
The 1st thing you need to do is check the brake lights, if they are not wiorking the park lock solenoid doesn't get power and the park lock remains engaged.
in order for your car to come out of park, the brake lights have to come on. it's a safety feature. are your brake lights coming on?if not then check for a blown brake light fuse in the fuse panel. if not that the brake light switch above the brake pedal may have gone bad.or another solution is, are you parked in a bind? with alot of pressure on the transmission? it will take 2 people to get it unstuck. 1st person in car with key on,2nd person rock car back and forth to free it from a bind. sometimes cars[automatics] do this.while the cars rocking try shifting out of park.hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com
brake lights do have to come on to shift out of park.make sure they do come on.also check for broken shifter cable, try rocking it back @ forht, sometimes the cable on transmission bind when under certain situations.rock it back @ forth while attempting to shift out of park. hope this helps!!!
are you stuck in park? are you on a hill? if so,you're gonna need some help shaking the car back @ forth, seen this many times@not unusual. while sometimes it happens.rock the car back@forth while trying to shift out of park
Hi, Try releasing your parking brake and having someone push or rock your car. Sometimes the gearbox gets stuck in Park if the car moves after you put the car in Park and let the car roll a bit before applying the handbrake. It could also be a fault with the gearbox itself. Its also possible that the locking tab mechanism (that gets relesed when you press the button on your auto gear shift) has jammed. If you can get it out of Park do not put the car back into Park ,but rather put it in Neutral after you have finished driving around etc and use the hand brake when parking. At least you wont be stuck in Park until you get it to the repair shop. Note that your car can roll in Neutral, especially if your parking brakes are worn, so take extra care when parking ie point your wheels toward the kerb when parking on any hills or slopes. Any time your gearbox gets stuck its a fair bet that you need to get your gearbox inspected by an authorized repairer. Good luck, Steve (Melbourne, Australia)
On most cars of that year and newer you have to have the engine running and be pressing down on the brake pedal to shift out of park. If that does not work try having some one rock the car forward and back while you try to shift out of park. If the rocking trick works in the future while still in gear and holding the brakes set your parking break then shift to park. This will keep the weight of the car of the parking lock in the transmision and prevent the problem from reoccurring. Good Luck!!
Try checking the brake light sending unit. Are your brake lights even working. Many newer vehincles will not shift out of park unless the brake pedal is depressed. However, a faulty sendind unit located on the pedal itself can keep you from moving anywhere. Just check to see if your brake lights are working to know if the sending unit is working.
