Question about 1999 Lexus ES 300

1 Answer

I have a 1999 ES 300. The battery starts draining if I turn on lights or a/c. I have gone through 2 new batteries and 4 alternators. It's to the point when an electrical shop says we can run a diagnostic for $$$ I want to hit them.

Because if I don't turn everything off and let the car charge for a while before I turn it off it won't start and I have to jump the battery. Also when I turn on the the lights or A/C all the lights in the car get dim. The reason it was felt the alternators were bad was because when tested while on the car the number (no clue what number that was) would drop below 12. Yes they were using a gauge - all 4 people that have worked on the car have used some kind of meter.

When I say turn everything off I mean everything that drains the battery like lights, A/C etc.

Also, in response to the posting about the amps - did all that 4 times.

Oh, and this is the correct amp alternator for the car. It was 80 for the first 10 years I owned the car. Why would it change now? Thanks anyway for your help Allan

TELL ME WHY YOU thought the battery was draing? and why it was felt the alternaters were bad? Were you going by a gauge? What were the indicators you went by? I'll run a diagnostic for you for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. just kidding. Tell me what went on.

Alternators come in different amperage rating. connect a good ammeter in series with battery positive terminal after engine is at idle. or connect a voltmeter on your battery. with engine at idle, turn on lights and a/c, raise idle at between 1500 to 1800 rpm. voltage reading should be 13-14 volts. if not, alternator is too small. check the amperage rating of your original alternator. good luck

The battery light has started to blink off and on periodically for the last 2 weeks

Either the battery or the alternator is starting to go bad, If you can, remove the battery and the alternator and take them to any Autozone to have them tested free of charge.

Vehicle was parked and not started for 2 months.

Hi, there will be diodes in the generator that are letting the power from the battery drain away through the parked times when not in use. to prove it charge the battery- then disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, connect 24 hours later and see if the battery as kept it charge, if so - fit new alternator, good luck.

I suspect a weak battery, but how do I know it's not a bad ALT?

when your car is running disconnect the positive cord from the battery. if the car stays on, than it is your alternator, if not its your battery. also if the car stays on, the head lights go dim if the alternator is malfunctioning

Battery light flickers

I would have the charging system tested. If the battery test bad check your warranty, many major brands have a free replacement period. The red battery light coming on when the engine is running often means the alternator is not putting out enough volts.
