SOURCE: Gear Selection Audi A4
GEAR LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT IS UNDER GAITER PLUS REMOVE ASHTRAY .......BUT I WOULD CHECK FOR WORN OR DAMAGED GEAR LINKAGES ....CLUTCH FAULT WOULD BE THE NEXT THING

Common low RPM problem occurs identically many other manufacturers ***/American/German vehicles due to camshaft position sensor:
Easily and cheaply fixed by replacing cam position sensors.

Doubt it as the fault suggests you need to look into the range sensor. If similar to Renault there is a switch on the gearbox that senses where the select lever is (at the gearbox end). If the display is wrong then the sensor needs looking at and either it will need to be adjusted into a set position by moving it, or perhaps the connector to it or wiring to/from it have a fault.

this gearbox is computer controlled, you will have to get it on the diagnostic machine to isolate the problem,we would all be guessing if we said its so and so.......

The computer usually sits on the wall next to the driver's legs, but yours could be under the seats, or under the dash, that one I don't know, but it should be kept dry, not under the hood. The valve body is in the transmission. It is accessible from underneath, just under the filter, or on top I should say, holds all your shift solenoids etc.
