Please Help!!! 1999 Mercury Sable doesn't seem to accelerate past first gear..engine revs up to very high rpms.

If the speedometer stops working the odometer stops also. Sounds like it is stuck in first gear. The RPM went up because the throttle was response to pedal but transmission not response. Check transmission fluid color. Whip off dipstick on a white paper towel look for gray if see any that is metal shavings and transmission is bad.

I hear and feel a thump when accelerating too fast from a stop. No thump if starting slowly. No problems accelerating once car is going. What could be causing this? Thump seems to be in the rear.

Transmission mounts are worn out and most likely your motor mounts too. Pretty straight forward job to replace but sometimes the bolts holding the motor mounts will be stuck requiring an impact wrench. Problem is that there is no room to get the impact near these bolts making a lift necessary.

Thumping sound when coasting in ford escape awd

I suspect there will be something loose in a CV joint, under load it will be held in place but when it is not under load it flaps around causing the thumping. You should be able to identify which side of the vehicle it is coming from then a mechanic should see it ASAP because if it lets go completely it will not only be dangerous and stop the vehicle from going anywhere it will be very expensive to fix the colateral damage.

Speedometer stopped working while driving - no longer registers

This has happened on our van multiple times. Through some internet searches I have found a solution that works.

Go to your van and, with the ignition off, press and hold the trip reset button. You will see 'Sof' and perhaps some diagnostic test numbers will show up on odometer; the unit will perform a self-test, and the system will do a reset and should it should operate normally.

Cheers!

Thump Thump Thump coming from rear when Hard Accelerating in 1st

It does sound like one of the universal joints. If you can raise the back end off the ground engage gear and the faulty u/v joint will make the wheel jump. This will let you know which side it is
