Question about 1988 Cadillac Sedan DeVille

1 Answer

1988 Cadillac - A/C has plenty of freon and runs cool for a short period of time and then the dashboard panel indicates that it went to ''ECON'' and shuts the A/C off. You can disconnect the battery to reset the A/C and it runs cold again for a short period and then back to ''ECON''. Is there a wait to bypass this switch?

Depending on if you have a late in the year production model or early there are 2 wiring diagrams for this year and they had 2 A/C COMPRESSOR CONTROL CIRCUITS. It almost sounds like you are having an issue that is causing the body control module to shut it down.I can send you the wiring diagrams for both types that I have found. Please let me know if it helps or if I can help more but I am sure I am going in the right direction on this if compressor is good and you have proper freon charge.
Im pretty sure you cant bypass that switch there is another switch kicking this on and I would almost bet it is a high or low pressure switch it could be a relay but without testing these components its hard top pin point. These wiring diagrams would help

If the car was retro fitted with R134a this was a common problem. There was a low side pressure sensor that needs to be changed. R134a runs different pressures than the r12.. When you go down the road the condenser cools off the system and the pressure drops below the minimum pressure. You need to make sure that the system is fully charged, not just cold to the feel. Both pipes coming out of the firewall need to be the same temp. this makes sure that the evaporator is flooded.
I hope this helped. Re-post if you need more info. Have a nice day and good luck.

Drain and refill the transmission completely and see if that helps. As far as the heating and AC goes it can be scanned with a GM TECH 2 scanner to see what the fault is.

You'll need to have the A/C system serviced. It is low on freon so the compressor isn't coming on, and you won't have any A/C. Usually you'll just need some freon.

If it's misting, this is a definite indication of an overfill. You should get a hose with pressure guage on it to avoid this. In the meantime, if a dangerous condition exists within your compressor. The optimal amount of pressure you're looking for is in the 40-45 psi range. Definitely needs attention or you will do damage to the system. Best of luck.

The climate control system will not work in Auto mode but only in Econ mode in my 1989 cadillac fleetwood. I press Auto but it goes to Econ.

Your A/C system has lost its refrigerant, and will automatically go into "ECON" at that time. System will have to be leak tested , repaired, and recharged. Hope this helps.
