Fit a 4L80E or the heavy duty rebuild.
Sounds like you need a better rebuilder have it built for severe service towing add a trannie cooler shift kit and use mobile 1 synthetic fluid a nd Lucas additive and have steeper gearset wider bands also have servos changed to Corvette servos will Increase band pressure and more firmer shifts the fluid passages for servos might have to be redrilled at rebuild to allow more fluid flow for servos that's how mine was redone over 400,000 mi ago still running strong also you need to stay on top of serviceing unit about every 30,000 under severe use and towing
SOURCE: GMC Rear End Rebuild
here is a great site randy sell great parts at a great price and he is a pro.
check his site and you will find even more info than you need randys
and what emissionwiz said is 100% correct i have had people bring me their trucks with rear ends that they tried to set up just by looking at tooth contact and they have ruined a new set.
follow randys instruction with the right tools and you wonnt have a problem.
good luck paul

Thanks for the info? Whats the difference with the hd rebuild and stock, im on a tight budget so the 80 will have to wait heard it was expensive. What year donor trucks do you think will swap without mods?
1991 to 1998 will fit, a HD rebuild has a stronger input shaft and clutch packs and should not cost much more than a stock rebuild.
