The sealing flap is not closing properly, most likely because of dirt on the rubber seal. Stick the fuel filler nozzle in and out 5 or 6 times slowly. This may dislodge the dirt. You can try blowing some compressed air around the flap also.
It may take a day or 2 for the check fuel fill inlet light to go out after you dislodge the dirt.
If that doesn't work, you have to replace the whole assembly. Any Ford Lincoln Mercury dealer will be able to order the part.

you have to get a reading of the on board diagnostic system, Autozone read it for free . then they will print a code for you that will show which part is causing the problem (oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter )

Sorry your going to have to change the gas cap. You can try spraying WD-40 to the rubber seal on the gas cap to get you some more months out of it, the seals get hard and don't seal any more. Good luck

Well in the newer cars you cant have the car running when filling the tank.
Take it to either advance auto or autozone and they will have a scanner. Tell them you dont know what the code is. Watch how they hook it up.
They will let you borrow it, but for what they say are "liability reasons" they wont clear your codes. Just hook it up and use the scanner. Really easy, menu driven device. And it will save you a bundle compared to what the dealer wants I'm sure.

Im faily certain you have a problem with your fuel sending unit. Im not sure how common that is with Chevy Malibus but i replaced that in my 98 jeep cherokee and that did the trick.
