You likely have a defective electric fuel pump. The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. It may be sticking and when you start the engine with starting fluid the increased system voltage brings it to life. The next time this happens have a fuel pressure test gauge hooked to the test port on the top of the engine that supplies fuel to the fuel injectors, looks like a tire valve. You can buy a universal pressure gauge for about $40.00
Sounds like it could be a weak fuel pump.Check your fuel pressure it should be 44-54 psi with key on engine off. There should be a fuel test port located on the fuel rail to connect a gauge to.
Follow the spark plug wires from the cylinder head...they all connect to the ignition coil on you 5.7 V-8 Trans Am...beautiful cars...Hope this helps...Location will be just under the tuned port fuel injection plenum/
The fuel pressure should be 49 psi. On all engines except the 3.0 liter you can check the fuel pressure at the fuel pressure test port located on the fuel rail. On the 3.0 liter engine you can disconnect the quick-connect fuel line fitting at the fuel rail and install a fuel gauge with a (T) fitting and adapters to check fuel pressure. Start the engine and check the fuel pressure. Hope this will help.
Plug the computer on to the port located under the dash on the drivers side to get a code reading. It sounds like a 02 sensor about to go bad. If you get a 700 area code, its a transmission sensor code.
