Pull #1 spark plug, with key off turn engine over by lower crankshaft and get on compression top dead center. See where the rotor would line up to the ignition cap,(when mounted) that is your number one on the cap. As you crank engine over with key, see which way the rotor spins (clockwise or counterclockwise) follow the firing order in the direction it spins (1on cap to #1 cylinder next on cap to #4 ect) Hope this helps.

If your talking about the firing order? I didn't know if you had distributor or coil pack, so here is both. I don't like using a picture to show number 1 spark plug tower, that can be misleading, with a distributor. The firing order is 142536.

I have a 1999 mercury cougar v6 2.5l and says that #5 cylinder misfires. When you go above 30mph to highway speed it starts to buck and kick. Check engine light also flashes and then stays on completely....
Sounds like its the #5 cylinder injector. But if you have to change it you better change 1-5 also. Because it will happen to the rest of them.

Need a spark plug diagram
Hello,

Take a look at this picture. This is from a 94 cougar V8, on the left and right are coil packs with wires coming out and going to the sides of the engine. On the spark plug side you pull to remove, on the coil side squeeze the clips and pull up. IMPORTANT - Do one wire at a time so that you put the wires in the same spot as you took them off.

Its time to do a injector balance and cylinder leakage test, to determine whether the injector or its circuitry is bad . The leakage test will tell you if the cylinder has a compression leak.

1999 Mercury Cougar 2.5 V6, had a cracked head and/or blown headgasket. Had the motor replaced now it is skipping on one cylinder.
pull the leads one at a time from the coil pack. if you pull a spark plug wire and the engine rpm doesn't change and there is a weak or no spark the coil pack is likely the problem.
