Check the transmission fluid level. check the coolant temperature sensors

Testimonial: "Is there a dip stick?"

  • J Rosado May 05, 2015

No dipstick, fluid is checked with the engine running and removing the oil fill plug. Fluid expands when warmed and a low fluid level causes delayed reaction to shifting and engaging. Coolant temperature sensor signal to the ECM helps drivability shifting of the transmission. Its a start for diagnosing, the problem may lay beyond and into previous towing of the vehicle, fluid condition, filter, maintenance.

My 1998 GMC 4x4 pickup is stuck in 1st gear have replaced the shift solenoids and is still stuck in 1st gear

If your 1998 GMC 4x4 pickup is stuck in 1st gear even after replacing the shift solenoids, it's recommended to have a professional mechanic inspect the Transmission Range Sensor, wiring/connectors, and the Transmission Control Module (TCM) for potential issues. These components can affect proper shifting, and a diagnostic scan can help identify the problem.

I have a G30 chevy van, out of the blue it decided not to shift out of 1st gear, trans fluid is clean and full, what could be the problem ?

There could be a number of possible reasons why your G30 Chevy van is not shifting out of 1st gear. Some potential causes could include:
  1. Faulty shift solenoids: The shift solenoids are responsible for controlling the flow of transmission fluid through the valve body, which in turn affects the shifting of gears. If the solenoids are not functioning properly, it can cause the transmission to get stuck in 1st gear.
  2. Low transmission fluid pressure: If the fluid pressure in the transmission is too low, it can prevent the gears from shifting properly.
  3. Faulty transmission control module: The transmission control module (TCM) is responsible for controlling the shifting of gears in an automatic transmission. If the TCM is faulty or has malfunctioned, it can cause the transmission to get stuck in 1st gear.
  4. Internal transmission issues: There could be internal issues within the transmission itself that are preventing it from shifting out of 1st gear. This could include worn gears or clutches, or other mechanical issues.
It is recommended to take your van to a qualified mechanic or transmission specialist to diagnose the issue and perform any necessary repairs.

Wont shift out from second gear

It is in "limp home mode." This happens when transmission errors occur, such as P-O700. You can try disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes, reconnecting it afterwards, and seeing if that clears the code and the problem. However, if it persists, the following may be informative: https://www.avengerforumz.com/threads/2008-avenger-p0700-p0760-stuck-in-1st-2nd.54831/

My 2013 Hyundai sonata 2,4 has a problem of the 1st gear doesn't work

what means does not work.
1st gear is like dead car will not move
stuck in first gear car drives ok in 1st gear
transmission in 1st gear but is really 2 gear or higher.
when the TCM brain seens gross errors, it can go to limphome mode and can be stuck in other gears.
check all fuse first and
scan the PC next

Transmission won't shift into high gear.

are there any codes? Does it shift ok in 1st and 2nd? sounds like your over drive shift solenoid or your 3 and 4 shift solenoid is stuck and needs to be replaced

My 2004 cavalier 1st gear is stuck i have to take second gear down next up it's go

Hi there:
Check fluid levels and maintenance time. Sound like a torque converter or valve body internal solenoids problem.

Also scanned the transmission module, to search codes in order to know exactly if you have some fault code stored there.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day

My stick shift is stuck . its a 2002 and I cant get it in 1st gear ?

Hi there,

There's a problem with the transmission. Have an in house mechanic check for it. I wouldnt recommend you doing it since you'll need to drop the transmission cage and in most cases, find the stuck mechanism physically.

Hope this helps,

Transmission stuck in 1st gear on a 87 camaro iroc-z

If the moudulator (vacuum controlled) is bad it will stay in low,Not sure what tranny, but if it has a vacuum line going to it ,start there,if you pull the vac. line off and fluid drips out ,it's bad.
If a 700r 4 speed ,Pull the cover for the governor (should have a wire clip over it,like a master cyl clip ,kinda) It's just pressed into the housing. A small amount of fluid will leak out. Just grab the governor by the end and pull it out ,The gear on the end is plactic,if it's "applecored" the governor can't work. I've replaced mine a few times.
Oh yea ,check the kickdown cable first, make sure ,if you pull on it ,you can feel the spring pressure aginst it as you get to the end.

Had no problems with transmission ,came to a stop put in reverse would not go put back in drive and will only go in low gear

I take it the shifter will work at all selections made. The problem pertains to the automatic shifting inside the hydralic pump only which a transmission is. if its stuck in low gear the solenoid for 2nd & 3rd gear is bad. That will leave you in 1st gear only all the time until the bad solenoid is replaced
