Testing an Ignition Coil

This testing procedure is valid for most automotive coils. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the side terminals of the coil. Do this with all of the wires to the coil disconnected. You should see 0.75 to 0.81 ohm of resistance. Then check the resistance between either side terminal and the center high tension terminal. The reading should be 10,000 to 11,000 ohms. Any significant deviation from these numbers would indicate that the coil is defective.

Hi...
On your HUMMER . the CODE P0358. refer to Electrical problem.
Or malfuntion of the ignition coil. cylinder # 7.. The last one in Driver side. Start from Front to Back. The firing order is: Driver side, 1,3,5,7,. Passanger Side 2,4,6,8.
Primary circuit. Is the Spark Plug Wire.
Secondary circuit. Is the Electrical connector on the Ignition Coil.

Check the condition of the Spark plug, Spark plug Wires. and ignition coil. and the ignition coil Electrical connector.

OK.. I hope this help on your problem.
Thank you for use fixya.

Change you coils, meaning buy new coils, sounds like you have a few bad coils, This happened on my truck, did everything you did and then finally replaced the coils and all worked fine after that

It could be the computer, but it could also be the wire. You can check the resistance of that wire, or simply use a known good wire to see if that is what it is.

The ignition signal from the Engine Control Module (ECM) is sent to and amplified by the power transistor. The power transistor turns ON and OFF the ignition coil primary circuit. This ON/OFF operation induces the proper high voltage in the coil secondary circuit.

Test coil pack

You can test the pack. Not sure what the tolerances for this particular pack are, but the Primary should read in the .3-.9 ohm range and the secondary usually usually 1.0-9.0 ohms range. If you get some resistance at all, it is likely not bad. If there is zero resistance at either primary or secondary, it is probably bad and needs replacing,

I have a 2004 Ford Taurus ses with a 3.0 liter v6(not the dohc model either). Today the check engine light came on. I took it to autozone to have the code run and they told me that it could be the primary...

Does the vehicle have coil on plug ignition or coilpack ? And it's not primary or secondary coil malfunctioning It's primary or secondary circuit . I'm assuming it has a coil pack because you say plug wires.
P0350 - Ignition Coil (Undetermined) Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction Each ignition primary circuit is continuously monitored. The test fails when the PCM does not receive a valid IDM pulse signal from the ignition module (integrated in the PCM).
  • Open or short in the Ignition START/RUN circuit.
  • Open coil driver circuit.
  • Coil driver circuit shorted to ground.
  • Damaged coil.
  • Damaged PCM.
  • Coil driver circuit shorted to VPWR.
P0351 - Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction See the description for DTC P0350. See the possible causes for DTC P0350.
Pull the spark plugs out an look at them , check the gap ,if too wide replace them . If the spark plug gap gets too worn ,the spark won't jump the gap. It will find the least resistance path to ground ,and it will do it inside the coil . Going from the secondary circuit back to the primary coil an to ground through the PCM - engine computer . The PCM has transistors inside that open an close the primary side to ground ,this builds up a magnetic field around the secondary inducing high voltage spark . Well this can short out the transistor inside the PCM . Most of the time that's what these type codes mean . The PCM would need to be replaced an programmed . This can also damage the catalytic converter. Your best bet , take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop.

I have no spark.. have replaced crank sensor, computer, coil pack.... cranks over fine just no fire.... also injectors are pulsing with key in on posistion

The coil is good after you check resistance from primary and secondary terminals, but it won't generate spark if there is not pulsing at the primary terminals. You can generate sparks by connecting at the primary coil to 12 volts from the battery. Connect the secondary terminal to a spark plug. Now the primary connection has to make pulses on off continuously (either positive or negative ) to generate the spark from the secondary terminal (now is at the spark plug). If you have spark here then the problem is the ignition module. It is a electronic device to perform the function as you just did to generate the spark. Good luck.

I have power to the HEI distributor, but nothing down the plug wires. I would like a test to see if the internal(removable) coil is good, maybe a resistance value

Below is a generic proceedure for checking your ignition coil.

Ignition Coil Resistance
  • With the key off and the battery lead to the ignition coil disconnected, use an ohmmeter to measure the primary and secondary winding resistance of the ignition coil. when checking the resistance across the windings, pay particular attention to the meter reading. if the reading is out of specifications, even if it is only slightly out, the coil or coil assembly should be replaced.
  • To check the primary windings, calibrate an ohmmeter on the X1 scale and connect the meter leads to the primary coil terminals to test the winding.
f22-39.gif Ohmmeter connected to primary coil terminals.
  • An infinite ohmmeter reading indicates an open winding. The winding is shorted if the meter reading is below the specified resistance. Most primary windings have a resistance of 0.5 to 2 ohms, but the exact manufacturer's specifications must be compared to the meter readings.
  • To check the secondary winding, calibrate the meter on the X1,000 scale and connect it from the coil's secondary terminal to one of the primary terminals.

No ignition to spark plugs

The coil has two seperate circuits 1) primary (is this where you are checking?) the thin wires at the base of the coil. and a secondary circuit this is your high voltage side the spark side and it needs the primary side to turn on and off in order to work youe test light should flash on the negative side on the primary circuit if it does not you will not have spark and your triggering device is deffective if it does flash then you have an open coil and it should be replaced.
Hope this helps you

CHECKING IGNITION COILS
1. Measurement of the primary coil resistance. Measure the resistance between connector terminals 3 and 1 (the coils at the No. 1 and No. 4 cylinder sides) of the ignition coil, and between terminals 3 and 2 (the coils at the No. 2 and No. 3 cylinder sides).

2. Measurement of the secondary coil resistance. Measure the resistance between the high-voltage terminal for the No. 1 and No. 4 cylinders, and between the high-voltage terminals for the No. 2 and No. 3 cylinders. Be sure, when measuring the resistance of the secondary coil, to disconnect the connector of the ignition coil.959e0ec.gif

CHECKING SPARK PLUG CABLES 1. Check the cap and outer shell for cracks. 2. Measure the resistance Spark plug cable (SOHC)
Resistance should not be higher than 10,000Ω per foot of cable. If resistance is higher, replace the cable.
