How do I stop the motor from turning. I am trying to remove the electric clutch on the rear of the motor

Also what is trhe torque specification once I remove the old clutch and replace with the new one

I have been getting the code p0740 it says something about the torque converter clutch circuit. it doesn't seem to be going into over drive. dose anyone have any suggestions I can try.


On some cars, there is a TCC solenoid in the transmission which can be replaced by removing the bottom pan. In some cars this solenoid can't be accessed without major disassembly.

The Main Bearing Cap TorqueTo install:
  1. When reassembling, clean the bearing caps and journals in the block thoroughly. Coat the bearings with a liberal application of clean motor oil.

  1. Fit the upper bearings halves into the block and position the lower bearing halves in the bearing caps.
  2. Place the crankshaft into the engine block, making sure it fits exactly into its mounts.
  3. Install the upper thrust washers on the center main bearing with the oil grooves facing outward.
  4. Install the main bearing caps and the lower thrust washers in the proper sequence. Make sure the arrows on the caps point towards the front (pulley end) of the motor.
  5. Tighten the cap bolts to specification in three passes. On 3E and 3E-E engines, use the correct sequence.
  6. Double check the end-play of the crankshaft by repeating the procedure described earlier.
  7. Turn the crankshaft through one or two full clockwise rotations, making sure that it turns smoothly and evenly with no binding.
  8. Attach the piston rods, following procedures given earlier in this section. Remember that the rod caps must be reinstalled in their original positions.
  9. Install a new rear main oil seal into the retainer and install the retainer onto the block. Tighten the bolts to specification.
  10. Install the rear end plate on the engine.
  11. Install either the driveplate (automatic) or the flywheel (manual), observing the matchmarks made during removal.
  12. If equipped with a manual transaxle, reinstall the clutch disc and pressure plate.
  13. Install the oil pump.
  14. Install the oil strainer and oil pan, using new gaskets.
  15. Rotate the engine into its upright position and continue reassembly of the timing belt, idler pulley and covers.
  16. Reinstall the engine in the car, following procedures outlined earlier in this section.

When coming to a stop the motor shuts down. to take off again you have to put it in neutral to restart. it then takes 2 or more tries to keep it going once you shift to drive.

How to remove starter


Removal & Installation - Starter
  1. Before servicing the vehicle.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Negative battery cable Radiator air baffle assembly
    Electrical connections Torque converter cover Starter
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    Starter. Torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Torque converter cover Solenoid -BAT- terminal. Torque the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Solenoid -S- terminal. Torque the nut to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm). Radiator air baffle assembly Negative battery cable
  2. Perform a charging system test and verify the starter is operating properly

(40 Nm) Electrical connection to the battery terminal on the solenoid and tighten the battery terminal nut to 13 ft. lbs.   2. Connect the negative battery cable

Starter - Removal & Installation

The starter motor on some models is very difficult to see from the top of engine compartment as it is covered by the intake manifold. On these models, without removing the intake manifold, the starter motor must be removed from underneath the vehicle. Because the starter motor mounting bolts are not easy to access, a long extension with a universal joint mounted on a proper sized socket could be used. A three foot transmission extension is commercially available from tool vendors that has a 3 / 8 inch drive of the driven end and 1 / 2 inch drive on the drive end. If used with a non-binding impact universal joint and a proper fitting impact socket, the starter motor fasteners can be removed from underneath the vehicle.
Once the starter motor fasteners are removed, the starter motor may have to be moved side-to-side several times to loosen the dowel pin if it has corroded in place.

NOTE When the battery is disconnected, the radio code, on-board computer and clock settings will be lost. The radio code should be obtained before disconnecting the battery or radio. Once the battery has been reconnected, the radio will not function unless the code is keyed in.
Starter motor electrical terminal fastener torque specifications for all models:
M5 terminal fasteners: 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
M6 terminal fasteners: 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm)
M8 terminal fasteners: 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm)
Starter motor mounting fasteners:
Hex head bolts: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
Torx bolts: 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm) Starter motor electrical terminal fastener torque specifications for all models:
M5 terminal fasteners: 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
M6 terminal fasteners: 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm)

Automatic Transmission Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Set the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Remove the climate control air intake duct at the rear of the engine compartment as follows:
    1. Release the grille clips at the rear and lift the grille upward from the rubber seal, then remove the seal.
    2. Remove the two self tapping Phillips screws from inside the duct to release the electrical harness housing.
    3. Press the electrical housing downward to expose and remove the two hex head self tapping screws on each side of the duct and lift the duct up and out of the engine compartment.
  5. Remove the intake manifold trim and valve cover trim covers.
  6. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors and ground straps, label for reinstallation and place aside.
  7. Remove the two fasteners that secure the fuel injection electrical connector harness to the rail. Remove the harness and carefully place aside toward the back of the engine compartment behind the right side strut tower.
  8. Remove the intake manifold.
  9. Remove the electrical leads from the starter motor and place aside.
  10. Remove the starter motor mounting fasteners at the transmission bell housing, then remove the two mounting nuts at the L-shaped mounting bracket.
  11. Loosen the L-shaped bracket to engine block mounting bolt slightly, then remove the bolt while supporting the starter motor.
  12. Remove the bracket, then lift the starter motor upward away from the engine.
  13. Visually inspect the starter pinion and ring gears for any signs of damage.
  14. Installation is in reverse order of removal.
Manual Transmission Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Set the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the fasteners for the reinforcement mounted between the frame rails just behind the rear lower control arm bushing brackets. Mark the bar-s direction for proper reinstallation and remove the bar.
  6. Remove the fuel line cover located near the left side rear lower control arm bushing bracket.
  7. Release the fuel lines and reverse light wiring from their routing brackets.
  8. Note the routing of the starter motor electrical wires, remove the wire mounting nuts, and place the wires aside.
  9. Remove the top and bottom starter motor to engine-transmission mounting fasteners.
  10. Remove the two mounting nuts at the L-shaped mounting bracket.
  11. Loosen the L-shaped bracket to engine block mounting bolt slightly, then remove the bolt while supporting the starter motor.
  12. Remove the bracket and carefully lower the starter motor downward away from the engine.
  13. Visually inspect the starter pinion and ring gears for any signs of damage.
  14. Installation is in reverse order of removal.

Okay...here is a list since no motor size:

2.5L----- 56-64

3.0L----- 56-64

4.0L----- 59

5.0L----- 75-85

All in ft lbs.......this is for the flywheel.

2005 Dodge 1500 code p0404 EGR valve.


The electronic EGR valve and solenoid assembly is attached to the rear of the left cylinder head ,

  1. Remove electrical connector (5) at top of EGR valve solenoid.
  2. Remove tube mounting bolt (1) at intake manifold.
  1. Remove two bolts (4) connecting EGR tube (1) to valve assembly.
  2. Remove gasket located between EGR tube flange and EGR valve assembly.
  3. Remove two EGR valve mounting bolts (5).
  4. Separate valve assembly (3) from engine.
  5. Remove and discard metal gasket located between cylinder head and valve assembly.
INSTALLATION
  1. Clean area at rear of left cylinder head where it joins base of EGR valve.
  2. Clean EGR tube where it joins EGR valve.
  3. Position new gasket between EGR valve and cylinder head.
  4. Position EGR valve to cylinder head. Install and tighten two bolts (5). Refer to Torque Specifications.
  5. Position new gasket between EGR tube flange and EGR valve assembly.
  6. Position EGR tube (1) to side of EGR valve and into intake manifold.
    1. Install EGR tube flange bolt (1) at intake manifold. Tighten bolt. Refer to Torque Specifications.
    2. Connect electrical connector (5) to top of EGR valve solenoid (2).Do a final tightening of two EGR tube bolts (4). Refer to Torque Specifications

Pinion seal leaking


check your rear diff vent if pluged clean it out and clean up the pinion seal.sometimes if the leak is caused by pluged vent and has not been leaking long once vent is clean sometimes the leak will stop.there is not a specific torque amount because it is rotational torque(how hard to turn pinion).there is a crush sleve on the pinion and if torqued too tight or too loose brg preload will be wrong and brg damage could result.mark and remove drive shaft.remove rear wheels,brakes,axles.so when turning pinion you dont have any drag from brakes or axles.mark the position of the yoke on the pinion.remove yoke,replace seal,reinstall yoke be sure to replace pinion nut.tighten nut until it takes the exact same amount of force to turn pinion as before taking original pinion nut off.hope this helps.

PO740 is a TCC/lockup code.TCC stands for Torque Convertor Clutch.In between the engine and transmission is a torque convertor.Inside the torque convertor is a clutch.This clutch engages to eliminate slippage inside the torque convertor.When a malfunction occurs in the system,which is activated by solenoids,and a computer,a TCC code will set.There is a diagnostic route specifically for that code,to determine if the malfunction is electrical,mechanical,or hydraulic.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the gearshift lever assembly from the control housing.
  3. Cover the opening in the control housing with a cloth to prevent dirt from falling into the unit.
  4. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  5. On 2WD vehicles, matchmark the driveshaft to the rear axle flange. Position a drain pan under the tailend of the transmission. Remove the driveshaft-to-rear axle flange fasteners and pull the driveshaft rearward to disconnect it from the transmission.
  6. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line a the clutch housing. Plug the lines.
  7. Disconnect the speedometer from the transfer case/extension housing.
  8. Disconnect the starter motor, back-up lamp and, if equipped, neutral sensing switch harness connector.
  9. Place a wood block on a service jack and position the jack under the engine oil pan.
  10. On 4WD vehicles, remove the transfer case from the vehicle.
  11. Remove the starter motor.
  12. Position a transmission jack, under the transmission.
  13. Remove the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts and washers.
  14. Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the transmission mount and damper to the crossmember.
  15. Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the crossmember to the frame side rails and remove the crossmember.
  16. Lower the engine jack slightly to angle the transmission assembly. Work the clutch housing off the locating dowels and slide the clutch housing and the transmission rearward until the input shaft clears the clutch disc.
  17. Lower the transmission jack and remove the transmission from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Check that the mating surfaces of the clutch housing, engine rear and dowel holes are free of burrs, dirt and paint.
  2. Place the transmission on the transmission jack. Position the transmission under the vehicle, then raise it into position. Align the input shaft splines with the clutch disc splines and work the transmission forward into the locating dowels.
  3. Install the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts and washers. Tighten the retaining bolts to specifications. Remove the transmission jack.
  4. Install the starter motor. Tighten the attaching nuts.
  5. Raise the engine and install the rear crossmember, insulator and damper and attaching nuts and bolts. Tighten and torque the bolts to specification.
  6. On 4WD vehicles, install the transfer case.
  7. On 2WD vehicles, insert the driveshaft into the transmission extension housing and install the center bearing attaching nuts, washers and lockwashers. Connect the driveshaft to the rear axle drive flange.
  8. Connect the starter motor, back-up lamp and, if equipped, neutral sensing switch connectors.
  9. Connect the hydraulic clutch line and bleed the system.
  10. Install the speedometer cable.
  11. Check and adjust the fluid level.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Install the gearshift lever assembly. Install the boot cover and bolts.
  14. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  15. Check for proper shifting and operation of the transmission.
