How do I use a multimeter to make sure my headlight socket is getting power?

The headlight doesn't work, I've tried to different bulbs. If I could add a pic, I would. The socket has 2 pieces of metal that hold the headlight in - the headlight has 2 flat metal pieces that just slide into it.

If you're not familiar wirth the process already, My advice is to take it to a repair shop. You can damage both the parts and yourself in the process.

Set dial to 12VDC and put meter red lead to light socket contact and the black to a metal ground, of course, light switch has to be on, and iginition too in most cars these days. A lot of Euro cars have fuses which control each headlight, so I would start there, rarely is it a wire short or contact, of course, are you sure headlight bulb is good, this is the most likely issue.

Replaced bulb on my 2007 dts left front headlight but it will not work. it appears that i am getting power to the area. help

Check power at the connector to the bulb using a 12vdc probe or multimeter - if OK, then try a different bulb. If not OK, check the connector at the headlight lens.

Right headlight not working

Check the bulb socket to make sure it's making good contact. Even add some dielectric grease to possibly help. Most sockets will melt and not be able to see it till you remove the bulb.

Front left turn signal doesnt work

The turn signal circuit is different from the parking lights. So the headlights would not be involved.
You should have power on one side of the bulb for parking lights and the other for turn signals.
If you have no power for the turn signal circuit, I would look at the turn signal switch. It powers each bulb separately.

One backup light works and one doesn't on a 88 chevy 1500. New bulbs and bulb holder.

Connect a Test Light between the ground wire on the light socket (bulb holder) and somewhere on the body (a clean/bare metal surface) and then put the transmission in reverse.
If the Test Light lights up, you have a bad ground (broken wire, bad/corroded connection). If it doesn't then use a Multimeter to check for power on the Positive side of the Socket, No or Low voltage means a bad wire. Battery voltage is generally 12.45 (without the engine running) and 14.5 (with the engine running) So if you're getting less than that (by more than .3) you have a poor connection or damaged wire

Left brake light doesn't work when brake depressed but comes on when headlights are turned on.

Hello, this indicates a problem with either the left rear bulb or the socket that the bulb goes into. remove the rear bulb and check, also take a good look at where the bulb plugs into the socket and make sure there are no corrosion or burn marks

How do i change my headlight

Actually if you raise the hood and look at the back of the headlights you will see that bulbs are socketed into the headlight housing. So you disconnect the wire plug and turn the bulb, firmly not violently, about 60 degrees and pull it straight out. You put in the new bulb in the reverse order. Note that the bulbs are different for inner and outer sockets so make sure you are putting the right bulbs in the correct sockets. Read the instructions, that come with the bulbs. If you get grease, sweat, or any other substance on the bulb glass it will cause a problem.

I have had the same problem on both Headlights at different times on my 2002 Envoy. I had to replace bulb sockets. Sockets with pigtail can be purchased at most auto parts stores. Make sure to put conductive lube on terminals when reinstalling.

Changed passenger side headlight bulb, now unable to adjust or align head lights

Changing the bulb should not have affected the housing adjustments.

The bulb is just inserted into the headlight housing. The adjustments on the headlight housing is what adjusts the alignment of the headlights.

Did you maybe not get the bulb not seated correctly in the socket? Or didn't get the socket not seated correctly into the housing?
