Not easy to fix yourself. Under dash / hard to get to - controls - that direct all of: cold AC air / hot heater core air / blend mixed air / or vent air / - to various vents on the car. I believe my 2000 Taurus SE has some mechanical / electrical control device (a little box with motor and gears, and output shaft) that does the job, likely receives it's electrical control input from the computer - under the dash - based on where you have set the rotary temperature and vent controls on the dash / driver climate control rotary knobs. ( I've seen the little gearbox myself, under dash, near center, above hump, a tiny plastic box w/connector). Not easy to get to, troubleshoot, or fix. Probably expensive to have done at dealership or garage (labour and complexity). Must refer to specific technical service manual or service CD for the specific year and make of the vehicle - to even be able to know what you are looking at / to have a chance to be able to know what you're dealing with there, on that vehicle, diagnose, troubleshoot, find, and repair. [ Personally - since my 2000 Taurus is so old, high mileage, and don't need AC very much where I am (climate not too hot normally) - I have personally removed all AC stuff from under the hood in the engine compartment & gone with a shorter serpentine belt. Compressor out. little tubes & tanks & hoses all related to AC - out. AC rad in front of main RAD - out. Tubes cut close as possible to firewall. Why? Don't wanna spend money on AC. AC not working long time ago - leaking / expensive to fix / recharge / and doing other work on rad at time - ripped it all out. Plus have heard, eventually AC compressor bearings / clutch fail, and can stop important multifunction serpentine belt and give other problems - which drives other critical important stuff - alternator, water pump. So OUT it all came. AC under hood all out. Weight reduction, drag reduction, more space to work there, better mileage, simplification, etc etc. There is a good FORD TAURUS forum which describes many Modifications like this one. Search the internet for that FORD TAURUS FORUM - its very good ! )

Leaky or crapped vacuum hose. Check ALL vacuum hoses. If it weren't for the vacuum produced by the principals of the "works" your motor would not work. Vacuum is a by-product that Ford uses.

Somewhere there is, I predict, several rotten and nasty hoses. Check them all, your Ford may even run better. That's because the rubber and plastic gets weak from the hot/cold SWINGS.

Think of over cooked spaghetti.

The system to change from vent to defrost etc. it's all vacuum controlled. First thing I would do is look inside your engine compartment and look at all the black hoses close to the firewall. Check to see that they have no cracks, have come apart, this is also a good time to check your oil, and do a visual for anything that doesn't look tight or right. In Ford your temp is cable controlled but vents are all vacuum. Words case scenario you may have to take off that control panel to investigate further. One last thing if you can look under the dash tho make sure morning had been kicked loose. A good trick to use for an inspection like that is a mirror and flashlight. Let me know. Jim

SOURCE: My front defroster doesn't work

Their is a vacuum actuated valve that redirects the flow of air from the panel to the defrost vents when the defrost is selected. I would check the vacuum line running to the valve while the vehicle is running with the defroster on and check whether or not the line is pulling a vacuum to actuate the valve, if not you obviously have a bad line or vacuum line fitting. If you have suction on the vacuum you will need to check the valve and see that is functioning properly. The valve is usually located under the dash on the passengers side. If you are mechanically inclined i would go to a local auto part store and pick up a repair manual for your car for about $20 as they contain diagrams and info that will save you alot of money.

SOURCE: Vent control

You have a vacuum leak.Defrost is the default postion(no vacuum).
See if you can locate the small black vacuum line that goes inside the vehicle on the passenger side near the heater core. The trace it back, should see it going to a canister then to the intake manifold.Make sure it is not disconnected or broken somewhere.

SOURCE: My 2003 Ford Expedition a/c blows out the defrost

The vacuum motor is not operating right due to a loose vacuum tube, ore electrical connection or the logic is bad in the climate control electronics. The vacuum motor controls the door angle which controls whether the a/c blows out of the front vents or the defrost vents.

Check for vacuum leaks. Common problem is the line that comes from the engine into the cabin of the car. It gets hard and brittle and cracks, then no vacuum to power the vent actuator pods.

Check to see if the duct hose to the defroster vents has come loose. If air is blowing out under the dash when you have the control set to defrost, then this is likely.

A/C airflow ( 1996 Ford Taurus)

It sounds like you might have a vacuum leak. The air doors that control where the air flow goes are vacuum operated, and if a line gets broken or dry cracks, the system will go to its "default" setting, which is usually either the defroster or the floor. Start at the engine and check all of your vacuum lines, both rubber and the hard plastic ones. There will be at least one vacuum line, usually a hrd plastic one, that goes through the firewall, near where the heater box is. Check them all. Remember that there are also vacuum lines that go inside the car, behind the dash to the control head. Good luck.

Vacuum diagram 1992 ford taurus

Well as far as knowing exactly which hose to put where i cant help. Other than tell you to buy a chiltons manual at advance auto. Now there is a box in the passenger side floor under the dash of your taurus. this box is actually where the flipper is that switches from floor, to vents, and of course your defroster. So you can reach up there manually and switch yours to defrost. Just turn your heater on and(blower motor) then look for the black box should be like one foot by 1 foot. There will be a little siver selector switch on the side of this box. Just flip this switch by hand and you will make your hot air go up to your defroster, also while you are under there, look for loose vacuum hoses, this is normally cause by children hitting these hoses with their feet and disconnecting them. So i am sure now that you know where to actually look you can fix this problem. Hope this helps ya
