The tumblers in the ignition switch just allow you to turn the switch when the right key is used
they represent a combination that has to correspond to the cut of a key to allow the barrel to turn and so operate the switch
they have no connection to any thing except the barrel

SOURCE: 92 F250 ignition tumbler can't remove

You need to remove the steering wheel and disassemble the steering column far enough to access the lock cylinder release tab from the inside. If you have already purchased a replacement cylinder, you can locate it quite easily.

2010 Malibu key wont go into ignition switch

The tumblers may have collapsed. In which case you would have to replace the switch. They can be replaced if you can get the key in.. If you get a replacement you can try forcing it, if it locks up you will have to drill it out to get it replaced.

How to remove ignition cylinder

I have done lots of these because the key is hard to turn and you must "WIGGLE AND SHAKE" to get your car started. If this is the problem you are experiencing, then:

Yes, you can replace just the ignition lock cylinder. I recommend using the AC Delco lock cylinder kits. (AC Delco Part Number D1493F) They come with packages of numbered tumblers (which must be assembled) so the new cylinder can be configured to accept your existing Ignition key.

If you replace the entire ignition switch/lock cylinder assembly, your computer will have to be reprogrammed so your engine will start and run. (Not to mention, this is the expensive way to do it.)

You must remove both your instrument cluster and your radio to access the mounting screws and elecrical connectors for the switch/tumbler assembly. It is not real hard to do, but assembling the new tumblers into the new cylinder can be kind of tedious. (As well as extremely frustrating if you do not do it correctly.)

My car just stop running i tried to restart it and it would not stay started

try the ignition switch.. i am not sure try turning the key and keeping it in the turn over position... if it runs it is the ignition switch probably.. it means it is running of your starter.. you will have to hold the key there tho.. because it wont stay started if you dont hold it in the turn over... it can also mean key and tumbler... do you have gas in it??

Get someone to change the ignition switch. Chevy is notorious for having cheesey ignition switch tumblers. I just had the exact same problem with my chevy truck.

My key will not turn the switch in my 2003 Chevy Malibu. Gear shift is locked, but steering wheel is unlocked. Ran and cranked fine yesterday. Could this be a blown fuse?

sometimes when people have to many things on a keychain it can cause wear in the tumblers in the ignition so always have just your car key and remote only on your keyring, but try to mess with the shifter at the same time turn the key ive seen this happen alot.

01 malibu ignition switch will not turn/ are no details damn key will not turn

The lock tumblers inside the key lock cylinder have jamb up causing the key not to turn. Since the tumblers are made of brass they are no longer usable. As a retired locksmith I can tell you this is fairly a simple repair. The key cylinder is mounted on the dash which is the easiest removal on any car made after 1967. Go to any General Motors dealer and get a replacement part. The dash plate trim will need to come off to gain access to remove the lock

2000 Malibu an Remove Key without turning off

if you wish to replace your ignition key tumbler  i go to an auto recycler and find a similar make of car with the keys still in it and pull off the steering wheel  to do this you need a socket about 1 inch or 1 1/8  1/4  1 3/8  or so  once the nut is off  you need to hammer the center bolt down while pulling up on the steering wheel with your knees etc  or have a second person help   if you have a puller it may help   remove the ignition (you need the key to do so  then find the locking pin  press it when you are able to while turning the key   now take apart your car and reverse the procedure
