Do I change the piston and ring or replace the engine?

My car is burning oil seriously after I changed the inlet valves. The mileage is 73,oookm and just about 5years old

Is it adviceable to ring the engine or replace the engine?

If it is a high mileage engine I would say not advisable. Why would you replace the rings? Low compression? Oil Burning?

My toyota is start burning engine oil besides the pistons rings what else can make that happen

if you have bluish smoke coming from the tailpipe, then it is bad rings. however the valve cover gasket on toyotas tend to start leaking with age as well and if there is not much smoke, the oil may be leaking onto the exhaust tubes or down the ports past the spark plugs into the cylinder.

I have owned several including a 2000 that i drive everyday.They have all used more oil than i thought was normal ( about 3 quarts between changes).A new pcv valve will help, i dont belive there is a fix other than rebuilding engine.

Depending on the mileage, worn piston rings are the most likely cause. There are also numerous places on these engines that leak - valve cover gasket, distributor seal, cam seal and oil pan are the most common. You can try a heavier weight oil the next oil change. If you're current using 10W30, try switching to 10W40.

Blue smokes come out tailpipe when i start the car but stops afte

Symptom: Gray or blue smoke from the exhaust. You notice gray smoke coming from the exhaust when you start your car. The smoke may or may not disappear after the car is warmed. If it is, it is less noticeable. The smoke may have a bluish tint to it. Possible causes:

  1. The engine's piston rings may be worn.
    The Fix: Replace piston rings. (Generally not a DIY job)
  2. The engine's valve seals may be worn.
    The Fix: Replace valve seals. (Generally not a DIY job)
  3. Damaged or worn valve guides.
    The Fix: Replace valve guides. (Not a DIY job)
Symptom: Engine uses more oil than normal, and there is some smoke from the exhaust. The oil level is low between oil changes. It appears that the oil is being burned by the engine because of the smoke in the exhaust. You may or may not notice the engine doesn't have the same power as it used to.
Possible causes:

  1. The PCV system is not working properly.
    The Fix: Replace PCV valve.
  2. The engine may have mechanical problems.
    The Fix: Check compression to determine engine condition.

The engine uses oil about one quart per 200 miles I have three plugs that get fould up every 1500 miles there on the left side of the engine I was told the valve guides are bad. the van runs good at 65 mph

Have a compression test run on the engine.

In my view if you are burning this much oil and the plugs are fouling then the piston rings are quite worn and need to be replaced. If this is a high mileage 88 model running on the original engine you must expect this kind of wear especially if the engine oil has not been replaced at optimum intervals during the vehicle's life. Typically owners do not change the engine oil in their vehicles often enough for the type of driving they do.

The required engine work (or rebuilt engine change over) will be expensive. If you have an average vehicle its low retail market value (and very low dealer trade in value) would mean you are much better off spending the money on a newer replacement vehicle in much better condition.

Smokes for a few seconds on first start in morning

This is probably oil burning off which has seeped by the valves and rings overnight. Sign of a higher-mileage engine. An oil additive for high-mileage engines may help.

Otherwise, it's not a serious problem, just fair wear and tear.

Blue smoke

Chances are if you are blowing blue smoke, you are burning oil.  Another cause of blue tint smoke is you are burning to much fuel and not enough air.  If the engine does not act erratic or acts like it is flooding out, then I would say you are burning oil.  The most common problem found with burning oil is either worn piston rings, bad valve seats/seals.  If the engine has high mileage, I would recommend any type of oil treatment.  Change your oil, filter included, use some form of engine treatment, run it for a few hundred miles, and rechange your oil and filter again.  If your engine has over 100,000 miles, I would highly recommend using an oil that is made for high mileage engines.  As this oil has additives that will help ease the aging engine.  If this doesn't work for you, I would say you need to have the rings and valve seals replaced.  You can do this yourself with a little knowledge of engines and pick yourself up a Haynes Manual at your local auto parts store if you do not already have one.  Hope this helps.  Feel free to comment if you need more assistance.  Please don't forget to rate.  Thanks!

Take your vehicle back to your mechanic, and have him perform a DRY, then a WET compression test. Please provide both readings back to me. In the meantime, ask him what it would cost you to him replace the piston rings. This is your problem. The 2 tests will simply verify me thinking.
