Question about 2000 Dodge Caravan

7 Answers

My 2000 Dodge caravan's brakes are screeching after I changed them. Its only been 2 months since I changed them and its becoming very annoying. Changed the brakes and brake pads.

I dont know whether to buy brake quiet or to change the brakes again. Sometimes when the car has been off for 2-3 hours and then turned on again it doesnt make a sound For about 5 mins.

You may have transposed the pad with the sensor. It's a small metal tab and goes on the trailing side of the pad. This means it should be on the bottom and not the top.

A common problem is that DIY's don't realize the slider has to move freely. The pin goes through the slider and has a rubber boot on either side. If it's not moving freely the calipers cannot apply even pressure.

Think of your hand as the caliper. Thumb squeezes one pad, pointer finger squeezes the other pad. It the caliper sliders aren't working properly or are seized only one side of the caliper is actually stopping the vehicle and causing premature wear.

If you replaced the rotors at the same time, and didn't clean off the coating applied at the factory, then you may need to take off shoes and clean rotors with the correct solvent. They coat all new rotors with a coating to keep from rusting before installed on a vehicle. Sand your shoes with sand paper and reassemble.

Did you apply the brake pad anti squeal grease it should be applied generously to back of brake pads & also where brake calipers where brake pads will travel as they wear in some cases hard lifetime brake pads usually bmw/other german vehicles will simply squeal unless you install softer &wont last as long but im sure that brake grease will solve your noise issue you should have got a small tube where you purchased the brake pads !

With all due respect, If you've used inexpensive brake pads ; this can cause this annoying squeell along with quick brake dust build up on outside of wheels. Lower grade brake pads have no real tolerance for heat or longevety due to brake pad manufacturing composites.

If it has screeched since you replaced them. It could be the from the dust cover on the back of the rotors touching the rotor. They rust and bend easily.

Your squeaking is likely due to heat buildup as you are driving. This happens mostly during stop and go driving in town or while commuting to work. The pads don't pull away from the rotor when driving and end up dragging against it which keeps the rotor from cooling properly between stops. You can get a glue like substance from the parts house to apply between the backs of the pads and the caliper which helps the pads pull away from the rotor when you arent actually braking. Where did you buy your parts? I have learned the hard way that the "bargain" parts houses sell parts that are made from less than quality materials. The lower standard parts can have pot metal etc in them which also contributes to the problem.

2000 dodge caravan tail lights won't go off

It's probably the brake lights that are remaining on, because the brake light switch is damaged or your brake pedal is not returning to the full up position. If your pedal is coming back up all the way, you need to replace the brake light switch. It is located under the dash and you should see it move as you move the brake pedal down and up.
See the link starting at about 4:30 to see how to replace the switch (the first part of the video is about changing bulbs). Replacing brake light switch on 2002 Dodge Caravan

My brakes makes noise when start the car and stops after sometime

What type of sound is it first off? It could just be brake dust. Alot of people dont know that brake pads have a little metal piece on them thats sort of like a sensor, when the pads wear down past a certain point the little metal piece starts to scrap the rotor which will make a screeching noise. The more the pad wears down the louder and more annoying the sound becomes.

When you push the cruise control the light turns on on the dash but nothing happens what should i run test on 1998 dodge caravan se

I have the same problem on my 1998 Grand Caravan. Cruise control light comes on but it will not set. Have had the clock spring replaced (2 years ago) and BCM (6 months ago). Could be brake light switch on the brake pedal. Haven't been able to check it yet because of weather. Sounds easy to change and costs about $16.00. Will try to post if I get a new switch and it works.

Screeching noise when steering

These are your brake pads letting you know that you only have %10 left. There are little metal tabs that rub on your rotors when your brakes are low and cause a squeeling noise. Just replace your front brakes.

I want to know what the basic maintance on a 2000 dodge caravan

It depends on the mileage. You should change hoses, belt(s) and coolant at least every 3 years. Change trans fluid and clean filter every 30,000 miles. Change oil every 3,000 miles. Check the air filter regularly. EGR valve is a 60,000 mile replacement I believe.

If you don't have an owner's manual and like to DIY, get a Chilton or Haynes repair guide. Check the brakes at every rotation - I use 5,000 miles as my guide.

The problem isn't at your brake calipers. Your rotors have a slight warp to them causing your vibration when you stop.
