Where can i search by serial number for cat truck engines

I think in order to obtain that information from just the engine number you will need to ask the factory or find a really serious enthusiast who has had access to the production records.

Most vehicle manufacturers that also produce engines often have an industrial engine division that supplies engines for other vehicles and purposes - boats, pumps, generators and suchlike as well as to vehicle builders who don't manufacture their own engines.

A base engine can be adapted to have a wide variety of different power outputs and performance characteristics simply by changing the specification of the fuel system, therefore, you will need to know the intended use and destination of the engine before being able to make a guess at the horsepower. This can be further affected by the altitude it was tuned for.

I hope this helps a little.

Will not fire all new parts no spark

Only thing i think that should can happens is that the ignition parts are not designed in accordance with the agreed serial number and year of manufacture of the specific engine of your car.
There is often a number of changes take place in the course of a particular model and type of car which receive advance information without any modifications should always report the exact engine number prior to an order for parts and especially when it comes to ignition mechanism the possibility is there oft the magnet and ignition coil problem in first place allways give the exact motornumber to prevent this. if this the problem that in most cases is the truth.

NEED TO KNOW WHAT PARTS ARE NEEDED TO DO A ENGINE TUNE UP ON MY 2006 MALIB ss WITH A3.9 ENGINE

Depending on your mileage and when was the last time you serviced the vehicle. See your operators Manual for that vehicle year and model. Otherwise all you need is the recommended manufacturer Oil, Oil Filter, Air filter, Fuel Filter, Spark Plugs. Check your tire pressure, once again depending on the last time you serviced the vehicle and also based on manufacture recommendation you may want to flush and refill your coolant (Antifreeze).

Just bought a 1931 Desoto, the serial number on the registration is 3A17410. I can't find anything with that number. Is it possible the number is a body style or engine serial number?

This is way out of my league, but here is some info that might help.
Before 1954 there was no uniform VIN number used in the USA.
In the years leading up to 1931 Chrysler Corp and a few other car companies used a FEDCO plate on the dash or firewall for the serial number ID of the car. The car was registered by this number by some states, and some used the engine number. Starting in 1931 the serial number was changed and moved to the door post. So a 1930 car should not have a plate on the door post.
The engine number was always stamped on the block. Also keep in mind 1931 Chrysler products were carried over into the 1932 model year, including Desoto.
The serial number depended on the make and model unlike cars of today. A series 31 model started with a number 6 or 8, while a series 32 model started with letters like SA or CFS, a series K started with the letter K, and so on. Actual serial numbers were seven digits.
On most models the serial number is also stamped on the frame near the front spring support.
You can do an internet search for DeSoto FEDCO numbers and serial numbers to get a general idea of how the serial numbers were arranged. You can also contact Chrysler Historical Society to see if they have the build card for your car. The build card would have both the original engine number and serial number. There are other resources including the Antique Auto Club of America.

Reading the serial number from the VIN

OK, Ready?,,,, 1S53F100001
The 1 is the year, 71, a more detailed date code is stamped into the door panel, A letter in front of the year is the month, A = jan, etc, if it goes past M, then it is second year.
S,,assembly plant(Deerborn,)etc.
53 is the body style, 2 door, 4 door,etc
F is the engine code, 390, etc
the last six digits indicate the consecutive unit number, all cars made on the same assembly line were in the sequence, don't forget, the next number in the line could have been a maverick.
The rest of the VC label, notes all the other info, color code, trim, axel, and where it was shipped. The starting serial numbers were 100,001, with the T-bird, Mustang, Torino, and Maverick on the same line. I have a 1971 Ford shop manual here, volume 3, electrical, if you are interested, It is for sale. Hope this helps.
