2004 infinity Q45 my car keeps overheating I replaced water pump, thermostat, radiator cap and still overheats I dont seem to get circulation from radiator top hose gets hot and bottom hose stay cold

    OK I see what your saying and your right it is different temperatures from hot to cold. My Q? Now is what can I do to resolve thi and would flushing it again help

I had kind of similar issues with an old LS400, couldn't figure out what it was. Until I tried a pre-mixed rad flush, called Gunk, works the best out of the ones I've tried so far. You'd want the super flush that comes in a small yellow bottle. Follow the instructions exactly, with the exception being you can leave it in the cooling system for 5 - 15 minutes longer than they suggest without doing any damage at all. The first time I used it I was rather shocked at the amount of crap that came out of that rad. I filled and drained with water, and even more stuff came out, then replaced the coolant. Ran like a completely different car. Seriously, the stuff's only around 8 or 9 bucks, what do you have to loose? Good luck, safe motoring. Grimm

Hi Kim,

I can feel your frustration. It sounds like you've done all the logical stuff already. The "donut hole" in your process would seem to be not changing the water pump. The water pump as you might imagine, is responsible for circulating (pumping) the relatively cool water in the radiator into the running engine that contains the hot water. Hoses connect the two together. A thermostat is between the radiator and the engine. Once the water in the running engine gets to a certain temperature, the thermostat opens allowing the water pump to send cool water into the engine and hot water out to the radiator to be cooled. The heater core is usually on the passenger side firewall area.

It sounds like the water pump is the only thing left to change - if it isn't working - it can't circulate the water - and will result in overheating. Lastly, a clogged heater core shouldn't cause the engine to overheat - in fact, if the engine begins to overheat, you should turn the heat to HIGH fan and HIGH temperature to help remove some of the heat in the coolant.

Ok, g35 coupe 06,52k miles Had over heating problem in april 2010,replaced thermostat, all's well. Now Jan 2011 overheating again, noticed upper & lower radiator hoses collapse, changed thermostat...


Heres a couple of things you can check. Start your car and remove the radiator cap,(before it gets hot mind you) when it reaches norm operating temp, look inside radiator to see if water is circulating. If its not moving, its a bad water pump. Also, youre hoses should never collapse, if they collapse when they get hot maybe you need new hoses? Finally, if those dont work, flush out your radiator. Open the bottom cockpit and use a garden hose and let it flush out the system while the car is running, about 10 mins should do the trick. If the radiator looks clean inside then it doesnt need flushed.

Is the coolant system being pressurized? I'll bet the head-gasket is beginning to fail. If your lucky it's a bad water pump...but I'm voting for head-gasket.

Overheating can be numerous things: Fans not working, water pump, thermostat, overflow cap, and the list keeps going. When the engine is running and heats ups, feel the heat of the top hose, if the hose isn't hot, the thermostat is most likely stuck open and needs replaced. If it is hot we know you have circulation. The cap on the expansion tank may be defective, if it can't hold the pressure of the water, it will release at the overflow cap if the cap is bad. Also check the coolant level.

The problem with overheat is due to poor coolant circulating. The main culprit is the Radiator. When the radiator is clogging up, coolant can't be circulating. The stagnant coolant inside the engine water jacket keeps absorb heat from combustion chambers having no way to dissipate the heat then the engine is overheated. You can test the water pump by removing the thermostat, then hooking everything back. Open the radiator cap, then turn on the engine to see if water flowing down to several small tubes inside the radiator. If water can't go down fast enough to cause over flow at radiator opening then your 90 Legend Radiator already got clogged up. Replace with a new radiator, not even a rebuilt one. Good luck.

It is overheating in 32 degree weather.....I have checked to see if my radiator is gettign enough anti freeze and it's fine but i dont know why it keeps overheating


The engine overheat is due to inefficient cooling. Therefore, there is coolant in the radiator but if it doesn't circulate inside the engine water-jacket to remove the heat generated from combustion's chambers, then it still causes overheat. If this keeps happening then it can cause the engine head wrapped then leaking from the gasket as people called blowed head gasket. It could be: 1- Thermostat is not opened. 2- Water pump is not working. Before starting to replace parts, it needs to verify it it is the root cause of the problem. Take out the thermostat and run the engine to feel if there is water flowing inside the upper hose. A- If it is not then water pump is not working. B- If is, then run the car a few days without thermostat to see if it causes overheated. C- Running car without thermostat still causes overheat then there are some clogging up in the water jacket defeating the cooling efficiency--> Need a good flush. Good luck.
