when you hold the accelerator does the vehicle stay running? if so the problem is in ithe IAC idle air control motor, take a small screw driver and using the handle tap the iac motor and usualy the motor will kick in and the vehicle will run fine then if the problem is rectified replace the IAC

remove the door panel. be very careful and make sure you get all the screws out. Should be maybe 2 on the bottom half of the door, and 2 on the top half. one is right by the handle, which is the one i forgot the first time i took my door pannel off. carefully pull the panel upward, and outward at the same time. Once the panel is off, disconnect the controls, and remove the light from the panel. Remove the plastic cover very carefully, it will tear, just keeps noise, and air, and the elements out.
There will be 3 screws, they are torx bolts, once you pull those 3 out. They are located middle of the door towards the right side. The motor will drop down a little bit. disconnect the wires for the motor, and wiggle the motor off of the regulator. the crown vics have a decent size hole to get into the door panel, you can also remove the speaker if that would help you do it. other than that, it just lining up the new motor into the car, pushing it into the regulator, and putting the 3 bolts in, make sure they are snug, and not cross threaded. put everything back together, and your set.

Also check to see if there is power in the start wire form the ignition switch, the wire is a white wire with pink stripe, most likely not a common problem, but still something that could go wrong. this wire will feed the starter relay under the hood...

KNOCKING NOISE IS NOT A GOOD SIGN.SOUND IF YOUR ENGINE OIL LEVEL IS CORRECT NOT LOW. SOUND LIKE OIL PUMP AND MAIN BEARING FAILURE.YOU NEED A REBUILT ENGINE OR OVER HAUL.

I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON SEVERAL CROWN VICS I HAVE WORKED ON ,& SOME OF THEM A SET OF PLUGS STOPPED IT,AND SOME OF THEM HAD TO HAVE 1 OR MORE COIL PACKS REPLACED, BUT THE PROBLEM THAT I FOUND THAT IF PLUGS & ALL COIL PACKS HAD BEEN REPLACED,AND IT WAS STILL IN THE IGNITION, IS THE WIRES GOING INTO THE PLUG ON THE COILPACK UNDER THE INTAKE TUBE, IF YOU REMOVE THE INTAKE TUBE,LOOK CLOSE AT THE WIRES FOR ANY BARE SPOTS,& LOOK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE INTAKR TUBE IF YOU CAN SEE WHERE IT HAS RUBBED IT,IT IS ALMOST A GIVEN THERE IS A BARE SPOT OR CRACKED INSOLATION ON THE WIRE, ENOUGH TO CAUSE A MISFIRE, (FYI) IT TOOK ME MANY TIMES OF INSPECTING BEFORE I LOOKED CLOSE ENOUGH TO SEE THE BARE SPOTS, BUT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS STRIP THE HARD PLASTIC AROUND THE WIRES BACK ENOUGH TILL YOU SEE GOOD CLEAN LOOKING WIRE,THEN SEPERATE THE WIRES AND IF YOU HAVE LIQUID ELECTICAL TAPE USE THAT AND THEN TAPE THEM WITH ROLL ELECTRICAL TAPE ,BUT IF YOU TAPE THEM UP GOOD SO WHEN THE WIRE IS BENT ENOUGH FOR THE INTAKE TUBE TO CLEAR ,& YOU CANNOT SEE THE WIRES GOING IN TO THE PLUG WITH A ROLL OF ELECTRICAL TAPE THAT WILL WORK TOO, I HOPE THIS TRICK WILL WORK AS GOOD FOR YOU AS HAS ME ON DOZENS OF CROWN VICS, ESPECIALLY P71 POLICE CARS.

Most likely the Idle Air Control Motor, but you could have other issues suck as a leaking fuel pressure regulator, bad EGR valve, or massive vacuum leak.

My 1999 crown victoria has been dieing when at ideal somtimes has rough ideal, but runs good when im driving, and the ideal will go to normal if i put it in neutral at stops. and somedays it just runs...


p1409 is a fault code fo the stepper motor in the EGR-usually they get dirty from carbon and you need to remove the EGR and clean it with throttle body cleaner. This egr (exhaust gas recirculation) stepper motor code is best checked by physically having a look at the bottom of the egr stepper motor. When the vehicle engine has a lot of mileage, a carbon build up will occur at the pintle rod at the bottom of the motor and make the exhaust gas passage difficult causing the code. When removed, the carbon can be clean and pintle rod freed up so that it moves. Yours is stuck open, causing poor idle since it is introducing exhaust gas into the intake manifold during idle, which if operating properly it will not do at all.

have a 97 crown vic,
in warm weather it idles fine and run fine
now that its cold I have to hold at high idle to have warm up
for about 10 mins.
if I just start it the engine will die with out me holding on foot on the gas

No if it starts but you have to keep your foot on the gas to keep it running and then it dies when you take your foot off the pedal the fuel pump is working otherwise no gas at all if it was not working the throttle position sensor is bad the contact in the sensor is worn out at idle spot but when you first star it the sensor is in a different position and with your foot on the gas you can keep it running right racing like a normal engine but if no gas peddle it won't run if you just turn the key to start like normal but there's also a possibility that the idle air control valve is shot to both are on the throttle body you can look at them at rockauto.Com I'm assuming that your using premium gas and your throttle body is clean if not clean it out and see what happens before you spend $$$ on parts and check all your vacuum lines

2000crown victoria willnot idle but will stayrunning whileapplying pressure to the gas.


The problem is a clogged fuel filter. You stated that it will not idle unless you maintain pressure on accelerator. Replace the fuel filter and it should clear up.

That sounds like your Idle Air Control valve has gone out.

You can get one at any parts store, and swap it out in a few minutes.

If that doesn't fix the problem, look at your Mass Air Flow meter, that could be out too.
