If the transmission is not shifting, could it be the vaccum modulator?
The trans missions was shifting well but noticed going into overdrive acted like engine had a miss. I changed plugs and wires and no change. then just other dau i noticed it starting out very sluggish, like starting out in high gear. I manually shifted and seamed to shift ok. Could it be a bad vaccum modulator?

When was the last time the tranny had a new filter put in with new fluid? if the vacuum module was bad, it would suck all the tranny fluid out of the tranny and into the engine from vacuum and you would be smoking out the tail pipe..

check transmission fluid and notice color if dark red or maroon a trans mission fluid and filter change is in order/everybody changes the oil/filter but not transmission fluid and filter this is working 10 more and hard than the engine!/sorry when off ! sound like no overdrive concern could be stuck valve onside trans (please note when pan is dropped a little metal is normal chucks is not)good luck!
Sounds like the filter in the trans is plugged up. Should flush trans every 45,000 miles and replace filter and fulid. Its easier to take it in to a shop and have it done they use high pressure flush which will clean out the whole thing for about $200.
i found with mine there was a bar that ran up to the carborator from the linkage that was not secured properly once i hooked it up my trans shifted better but i lost some performance so the bar is a governer of sorts.
it is not a main computer problem but the transmission control module. the engine speed sensor sends a signal to the main computer(ECM) which then in turn sends the signal to the trans mission control module. the cost of this can be pretty steep if you go to a dealership, however if you go to a local parts place like Napa the cost will be half. one last thing to check is to have a diagnostic scan tool hooked up this will tell you what codes are showing and i'm sure there are some. ythey will clear the codes for you. also if a solenoid inside the trans mission is the problem and sometimes they are because of gummed up fluid they can replace it for even less.. hope this helps...please rate this thanks
