I agree. You can use a spray water bottle and mist the seams of the engine while it runs. If RPM changes you have found the leak.
What an air leak does is allow more air into the engine as if you opened the throttle. Not sure if your engine has manifold runners. These devices are like internal shutters that change air flow. Do a Web search about your engine size and if manifold runners are used.
Also some engines have a part called an idle speed motor or ISC for idle speed control. The moving part on this electric device can get dirty and stick. It is located in the intake manifold and can be cleaned with WD40.

You need to check for a vacuum leak and throttle housing. Also if possible scan for codes you may also have a coil issue
