If not security it could be battery low or solenoid, it is the switch that opens and closes with a click when the key is turned and passes the electricity to the starter... almost like a light switch in your kitchen...it could be located on the fire wall or located on the side of the starter..... if you get a fast tic tic tic tick when you hold the the key in start but no starter action then the battery is the problem.....remove cable and clean post and connector but beware if you have security system cause it will have to be reset and it is a pain..... we jump a pair of booster cables to the side posts and connect to the battery cables so the circuit to the car isn't reset.... saves hours of frustration. The other thing you can try is to connect the jumper cable to the starter and touch frame...... this will tell you if the starter has a bad ground...someone needs to turn the key..... the next one after this is to hook the booster cable to the power wire( where the big heavy wire goes to the starter) and touch the other end to the positive battery post with the car in park and the key in the run position.... the starter should crank but don't hold too long cause you don't want to over heat the starter...... if it doesn't start then you probably have an immobilizer circuit on your car and disconnected or killed the battery and tripped the circuit..... easiest way to fix that with out pulling your hair out is to go to the dealer.... most likely the radio will have been tripped also..... if you are adventures search your make up on line and look for reprogramming immobilizer or key... just a thought if it happens to be this problem and it has been 3 yrs since. New battery change it out before you start that song and dance..save you some grief in the future... gm is famous for this problem

It could be a security problem , do you have any lights lit on the dash . SECURITY . What kind of vehicle do you have ? I can't tell you how all car makers do it , ford has a little red light in the center top of dash panel that when you crank over the engine the red light flashes fast if there is a ant-theft problem . GM has a light in the instrument cluster , Security or a lock symbol . Did you check the starter relay , fuse's !

There are others in the same spot , replace with one of the others an see if it starts then ! You could check for power an ground also if you knew how . Pull the relay an the socket it plugs into should have battery voltage at two of spots a ground at one of the others , that's through the starter it's self ! An the fourth should be open unless your cranking over the engine , this control from the PCM - engine computer ! If there is no anti-theft problem the engine computer energizes the relay closing the contacts allowing power to the starter ! On the side of the relay mite be a diagram of the two circuits . or on the bottom are the numbers 85 an 86 this is the control side of the relay . An pin 30 is battery voltage an 87 is the wiring down to the starter . You could jump pin's 30 to 87 an see if the engine cranks over !

Possible internal starter problem. Try tapping on starter motor while key is held in crank position. If vehicle starts, suspect a starter motor problem and replacement will be required

Car won't turn on; clicking sound

It does sound like a starter problem but the easiest way to rule that out is by trying to jump start the car with a push , if your starting motor has packed in it will still start with a jump start

How do I replace the starter in a 2003 Corolla? Over the past few days, my car was taking a little longer to start than usual. At first I thought it was the battery going on me. Yesterday my car wouldn't...

Hmmm. Don't be too hasty replacing the starter. With no exterior lights working it suggests an open circuit in the system that could relate to your starting problem. Start with your fuses that are related to lighting and starting. Check connections for corrosion and rust.
