The 3 most common reasons are LOW ON OIL. A bad sending unit or worn bearings.

SOURCE: 1996 Dakota 2.5L OHV 4 cylinder Oil pressure gauge and oil light

if light is not working then first try this
* move ignition switch to on position, remove oil pressure sensor pin and touch it to engine body where it should get earthing, and same time oil light should come on, if it is not then that wire is disconnected some where in loom .

Why dose my truck my truckturn over but has no oil presure just installed high presher oil pump

No oil pressure after hop replacement .the 6.0l has 2 supply tubes 1 for each head .also each oil rail has a dummy plug.all of which can cause a no oil pressure event.when u installed the hpp their is a fitting on the back of the pump .if that fittings o- ring was not replaced with factory o-ring it will blow out .no pressure .the truck will start if u have pressure.even if gauge is not working.so at this point u have an internal oil leak

Oil pressure drops and check engine ligth comes on for awhile then returns to normal. this has happend a few time and allway the same.oil is full and new .could this be the sending unit ? this is a 98...

I assume there are no oil leaks on the motor that could be contributing to loss of oil pressure.

I would have the engine oil pressure checked by a mechanic with an independent oil pressure gauge to see what might be going on. I would want to do this on a cold engine and also after the motor has been operating for a while and the oil is quite hot.
( I would also immediately be replacing the oil filter in case there is some blockage problem there. I very much doubt it but I would be doing that anyway just to be sure as it is simple and cheap to do. You say the oil level in the motor is correct and that it has been recently changed).

If there was a problem with the oil pressure sender unit I suspect you would have more frequent symptoms than you have indicated.

If the oil pump was faulty I believe you should also be getting more frequent symptoms.

It could be that the oil pressure relief valve is intermittently temporarily sticking in the open position and the pressure then being generated by the oil pump is insufficient to reach the minimum level. The warning light then illuminates.

Oil ligth stay's on

Locate oil pressure sending unit and unplug the wire. Be sure it touches nothing and check to see if light went out. If it did replace the sending unit. If not I recommend seeing a tech to install manual oil pressure gauge to check actual oil pressure and go from there.
