Why does fuel gauge stay above full?

In the mean time you may want to adopt the system I have done with my MY98. I reset the trip odometer at each fill-up. I have always had plenty of reserve in the tank when I refill at 300 miles driven. It is annoying but after 7 years I have learned to live with it. My tank contains 23 gallons and I usually have 6 or more gallons remaining at fill-up.

The expense of dropping the tank and having the repair vs the always check before travel the trip odometer has worked out for me. I have learned this process from boating where the fuel gauges can never be trusted.

Just filled the gas tank and the fuel gauge is not working.

IF YOU FILLED THE TANK WHILE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING THE GAUGE WILL NOT RESET FOR A WHILE BUT WHEN YOU TURN OFF THE ENGINE & RESTART IT SHOULD GO UP TO FULL AGAIN IF NOT YOUR FLOAT IN THE TANK MAY BE LETTING IN GAS WEIGHING IT DOWN SO IT WON'T RISE UP /// OR THE FUEL SENDER CONTACTS ARE VERY DIRTY OR A WIRE HAS COME OFF

Town and Country Van running out of gas and guage says half a tank what could be the problem?

If your fuel gauge is showing you in accurate readings this is normal to all vehicles that are not used to fill-up gas full regularly but sometimes the cause of the inacuracy is due to faulty float valve in the gas tank you need to replace it

Fuel gauge problems

Hi , your best way to go now is to hook up a variable resistor to the fuel sender wire and go by the manufactures specifications on different resistance values , full , half and empty. This will tell you if it is a gauge issue or maybe a swirl pot inside the tank has come loose impeading the float to rise fully. Also earth out the old sensor and hook up the fuel sender wire to it and manually lift and lower the float to see if it works. Sorry I do not have the manufacturer specs on resistance. Cheers.

Does the fuel tank in a 2004 Mitsubishi Diamante needs to be full in order for the gauge to work?

Hi Marglitt, The gauge should work with any amount of fuel and indicate how much is in the tank. What does happen on modern cars, is that the gauge will fail to move if a small amount of fuel is filled into the tank. This is a measure taken as most petrol driven vehicles have the pumps immersed in fuel, which helps cool the pump and prolongs the life of the unit. The reserve light may remain on if the fuel level has not risen above the operational level of the same warning light. All other gauges work on the hyundai but the fuel gauge wont work shows empty all the time how can i fix this problem

Turn the ignition on and off several times before inspecting the gas tank because a blown fuse is the usual cause for fuel gauge malfunctioning. If the gauge remains motionless, check your fuse box and determine the fuse's location using your service manual.
Replace the fuse if the link is broken or damaged. Then, inspect the gauge's wire connections for cleanliness and make sure the wires are connected.
Turn the ignition switch to the "off" position. Attach one end of a jumper cable to the fuel-gauge terminal behind the gauge itself. Attach the other end to the ignition terminal.
Replace the sender unit in the gas tank if the gauge reads full and your car does not have a full tank. Replace the fuel gauge if the needle remains inoperative.

FUEL SENDING UNIT IN THE FUEL TANK FAULTY.THE FLOAT ARM ATTACH TO SENDING UNIT.THE FUEL SENDING IS A RHEOSTAT WITH ELECTRICAL CURRENT FLOWING TO IT.YOU HAVE A COIL OF RESISTANCE WIRE IN RHEOSTAT.WHEN FLOAT+ ARM RISE WHEN PUMPING MORE FUEL IN TANK THIS CAUSE MORE CURRENT FLOW THROUGH COIL FROM RHEOSTAT TO FUEL GAUGE WHICH CAUSE FUEL GAUGE MOVE TO FULL MARK.WHEN FUEL LEVEL DROP THE FLOAT + ARM DROP CAUSE LOW CURRENT THROUGH RHEOSTAT COIL WIRE IN WHICH CAUSE FUEL GAUGE NEEDLE TO DROP SHOWING LOW FUEL LEVEL IN THE FUEL TANK.

Fuel and temp sensor problem toyota corolla two door 1989

Find the temperature sensor(usually around the thermostat housing)'disconnect connector and ground it with a test light. Observe the inside gauge. It should slowly go up. If so, change sensor. Do the same for the fuel gauge located on the fuel tank. If gauge move to fill as you groung the sending unit wire, change sending unit. Test the right wire. Ask for further assistance.
