SOURCE: Cooling Fans Wont Kick In

Make sure the fans are not locked up. They are after all just electric motors. If they spin freely by hand, that's a good start.

Otherwise, there will be two wires coming off the fan. Trace these wires and unplug them.

Taking these two wires, take a car or lawn mower battery (12V) and touch one of the wires to positive, and one to negative. It doesn't matter which. If the fan comes on, then the fan is good. If you reverse polarity then the fan only spins backwards.

If it doesn't come on, then it's a bad fan.

If it does, then it probably your temp sensor. The fans should come on automatically when you cut on your air conditioning.

How to flush coolant on 2004 grand prix

  • Move your badass w-body (a.k.a. Pontiac Grand Prix) to a level area and set the parking brake. Pop the hood and touch the radiator. If it's warm let it cool before you continue.
  • Twist the radiator cap one full turn (Remember to be careful because even when radiators are cool they can still erupt coolant)
  • Place any type of container (bucket [but has to be able to hold 2 gallons]) underneath the radiator and blow the drain plug. (The drain plug on your Grand Prix is on the driver's side bottom of the radiator facing the engine.)
  • Loosen the drain plug and let the old coolant to drain completely. (You may need a wrench to loosen the drain plug)
  • Dispose the old coolant in a sealable container (The coolant is very toxic to people and pets, so you gotta be careful)
  • Shut the radiator drain plug and fill the radiator with water.
  • Run car for a little bit and repeat the process again. (Let car cool, and drain water)
  • Close the drain plug and fill the radiator with fresh coolant until it's about an inch from overflowing. (DO NOT USE ORANGE DEX COOLANT IT IS HARMFUL FOR YOUR HEADGAKETS) You will need 3 gallons of coolant (SE, GT, GT1, GT2, GTP, GTP Comp G.) and 4 for the GXP model. Be sure to check the drain plug for any leakage.
  • Start your car and turn the heating system to high. Allow the car to keep running until the cooling fan turns on twice. After that happens, switch off the engine and check the coolant level. If it went down, add more coolant. If not, put the radiator cap back on and close the hood.

Generally, you drain it, remove the hoses and trans lines, the cooling fan, and the 4 bolts that holds it in.

1999 grand prix gtp second cooling fan will not turn on

How hot is the vehicle running? The second cooling fan is programmed to operate only, like the first cooling fan, at a predetermined engine temperature. It varies by model, if I remember correctly however I think it is 226F for the fan to turn on, and at some point if that does not begin working the second fan will turn on.

Does it come on when the AC is on?
Odd .
Fan won't come on till like 230 degrees.
Or run a small ground wire from the relay to a switch inside.

This relay in the underhood junction block is where the power flows through to turn your cooling fans on. If these do not come on when they are commanded by the pcm the car will overheat,

the fan motor could just be bad, you can test this by removing the fan and connecting a wire to each terminal and to a battery. the wires hooked up one way will spin the fan and the other way will spin the fan backwards so you cant hook it up wrong. I hope that helps you out!

Temp sending unit has gone out it tells the fans through the relays to come on. Those units are usually found on th block where the radiator hose couples to the motor.
