Is the cooling system full of coolant ? Do you have manual or automatic HVAC ? Possible water pump problem !

Low coolant. Check for leaks. Could be the reservoir cap and the hose that goes from the radiator to the reservoir. No kinks in the hose.

The water pump impeller has come adrift from the drive shaft ,one is plastic and and the other metal and they come apart causing this sort of problem

One of two things has happened. Either your coolant has gotten really low (easy enough to check) or you heater core is starting to plug up.

I have a 2004 tahoe when I start it to heat it up, the temp gauge goes up like usual, but will not blow hot air until I start driving down the road? I even let it warm up for about 45min. and still would...


Hi, the likely problem is a bubble forming in the system, possibly due to a head gasket failure.

Try stopping on a steep incline--does the heater stay warm? If yes, what you have is an air bubble that hangs at the heater hose until pressure from the water pump blows thru it as the engine speeds up. Park on an incline, open the radiator cap, run the engine until the thermostat is open, turn the heater on, crack open any/all bleed ports to release any trapped air, and fill the radiator to the neck. Wait until the level stops dropping and make sure bubbles don't continue to come up. If they do, you may have a blown head gasket that will keep forming these bubbles until you change the gasket.

Heater does not blow hot only cold air. Every so often the heater blows hot . When driving on freeway the heater works sometimes but turns cold when at red light.


Check the radiator level, if it low the hot coolant will not reach the heater. Second may be the water pump, as it wares the clearance increases and the efficiency goes way down and it cannot pump the coolant unless the engine revs are up.....

If the engine temprature does not reach the normal level as it used to, it may be the coolant thermostat.

Iif it does, it could be air diverter gates not working properly, cold air blowing at a a light could point to that. The diverter gates are located under the dash.

It also coul be the valuve that controls the water to the heater core, but unlikely cause of the cold air at a light.

Heater blowing cold air until I get on the interstate, then it works; however, when I stop at lights it starts blowing cold air again. The temperature gauge will be in the middle but the car will still be cold until the car starts moving.

Engine overheats when heater pipes connected


I think you could be right about there being air trapped in the system.
Or the heater core(radiator) is plugged.
Either way you need a pressurized radiator coolant pump to put the coolant in without air being trapped.
Although,i have seen it done by jacking the vehicle up high enough that the radiator was now higher than the heater core level, and then the coolant was put in.
But this is dangerous to try.
