The speedometer drive is held in place by a single bolt on a fork. remove this fork and pull drive out of output shaft housing.

Speedometer Cable

Speedo cables give little trouble these days unless incorrectly fitted or the seizure of the speedo. Few cars in the last couple of decades actually have a speedo cable at all.

There have been a few vehicles with split cables, designed that way because the end fittings were difficult to access, though the joint was usually obvious and very accessible.

The illustration looks like a lower cable with a plain end being clamped to the gearbox by a fork and trapping an oil seal, though a great many upper cables appeared little different except the oil seal was absent and they were secured to the speedo by a spring clip.

One problem is the end fittings of speedo cables are semi-universal and it is possible your car has already been fitted with a cable of non-original design. In the case of doubt the original cable should be removed and compared with the replacement and I advise you to disconnect from the gearbox first and give the inner cable a brisk turn and check whether the speedo needle flickers. If it does the trouble could be the speedo drive in the gearbox.

Need speeddominar repair It does not work

Hi
The speedo drive is in the gearbox at the back, take off the cable and check the inner cable for breakage, spin the cable by hand rather quickly look at the speedo if it moves its the drive in the gearbox, if not its the speedo clock. To check the drive, take the drive out of the gear box, held in with one 10mm bolt, check for ware, if this is worn you can replace it but the problem is the gearbox lay-shaft it worn and the problem will re occur in a few months.
Regards
Steve.

Ford fiesta registered yr 2000. speedometer stopped working, it flicked up and down then no movement at all. how can I repair it?

hi this is a common fault on the focus its usally a faulty speedo sensor that is fitted in the gearbox
if you open the bonnet and look bettween the engine and gearbox and towards the firewall/bulkhead
you will see the speedo sensor held in with a small steel roll pin remove the roll pin and pull the sensor out and dissconnect the wires to it and peplace it with a new sensor ,a healthy dose of wd40 penetrating spray will help to get the sensor out

My ford focus is leaking oil think it might be gearbox oil,

Is the oil you see reasonably clean or is it black. The gearbox oil would be cleaner than the engine oil. Gearbox leaks would most likely come from one of the following:-
  1. Drive shafts
  2. Gear change lever inputs,
  3. Speedo cable
  4. Reverse light switch
  5. Drain plug
  6. Input shaft seal (inside the bell housing).
Pig a piece of paper under the car when you park it at night to give you an idea where the drip is located and inspect the area above that position

Hi , i want to know where in the transmission is the speed sensor located?

hi the speed sensor will be located above the drive shaft on the driver side on a right hand drive , it goes into the differential on the gearbox .

Speedometer not working fuses are fine

ok if its a cable driven speedo then the cable has snapped or the speedo drive that goes into the gearbox is gone ,,also if its electric speedo then id go with the electric speedo in the gearbox ,,,a ten mil nut holds it in and it goes straight down into the gearbox,,youl see it from under the bonnet ,,

Speedo plug gear has broken off into gearbox

well you can but it is a bit more difficult than that as you will need allignment tool to replace and also the might be excess tension and you might need a pulling tool also to remove. it is very unusual that the mechanism drops into the gearbox though? well without effecting the performance of gearbox such as whines and creaks?

If its just the speedo failing and the rev counter works ok, its likely to be the speed sensor which is on the gearbox. This will have to be removed as soon as possible to avoid engine damage! Expect to pay about £30-40 not £128 like some have paid from a Ford dealer.

The speed sensor as well as talking to the speedo to say how fast youre doing also talks to the fuel pump and adjusts the amount of fuel to send to the engine according to the speed your doing. So, if it thinks youre doing 0mph, it will supply a minimum amount of fuel and is likely to stall when slowing down. You might notice a lack of power whilst the speedo is failing as its starving the engine of fuel, causing it to run a lean mixture, which also burns hotter and could overheat and damage the engine.
