2000 volvo v70. Radio was left on Would not jumpstart...battery takes a charge soon as it is connected to car..smoke starts coming from either starter or alternator and if I turn key on..blows fuse

that question is not very clear, is the smoke coming from the starter or the alternator ??? obviously which ever it is , the smoke will indicate a short circuit in either the starter or alternator and this is why the fuse blows when you switch on you need first to determine if it is the starter or alternator then get it replaced or repaired.

I have a 2003 chevy trailblazer and just had a starter put on 2 weeks ago went to turn off car and it would not turn off even when key was not in it then smoking at the starter

take it back to who ever put the starter in and have them do the job properly
smoking at the starter indicates that it is severley damaged.

How do I figure out if the starter needs replaced _ what are the symptoms?

Yes, it could be the starter. It also could be the battery. I've replaced the battery three times in my 20 year old car, but the original starter is still fine. I'd have the battery checked before I replace the starter.
In another car, I had symptoms like bad starter, but in that car, the starter was really expensive, and on a hunch, I had the charging system tested. The "new" battery was defective, saving me hundreds when I didn't need to replace the starter.

My 1985 vette starts up cold good and no smoke but after warm up it don't want to crank when it does it has black gray smoke for a min what's wrong

not starting when it gets warm could be a starter problem, the amp draw is probably to high for the battery to supply enough power to start. starter draw should be around 150-200 amps. the black gray smoke is too much fuel that isn`t being burnt. if the starter draw is too high then there isn`t enough voltage for the ignition system to fire the plugs properly causing the smoke.

Did smoke have an electrical or oil smell? Pull starter and see if gears are stripped. Cheaper to replace starter than to replace flywheel.

Starter wiring smokes under the hood when trying to start. Won't turn over. I would need a diagram of the components underneath the hood so where as to locate where it is. It smokes on the drivers side...

Hello , sounds like your starter has giver out. The smoking is from the battery cables that feed the starter. They smoke due to a larger than acceptable amp draw from the starter. You will need to replace the cables as well.

Battery seems dead but lights and everything electrical seems fine smoke comes from battery if you jump it

Okay, what you seem to be saying is the battery does not turn over the engine and the battery smokes when you jump it to start it. But the lights and radio and everything works except the car will not turn over by itself. The battery smokes because either the battery has a short in it, it smokes because the starter is dragging, and/or the jump wires are not hooked up red to red and black to black. You need to have the battery and starter checked. If the car runs take it to an autoparts place to test. Or if it won't run take out the battery have it tested and if it is good, then take out the starter to test it.
