My car is dropping to very low rpms mostly when in drive. It seems to do better when in park. The problem is worse when it has rained. Where to start?


The place to start is probably the transmission. One of the telltales of a transmission failure in the making is a problem with your engine's revs. It the revs seem to go up but your Hyundai doesn't seem to be going anywhere it is pointing to a problem with slipping clutch packs or bands. If it is dropping revs on the low end and hunting it may mean that the speed sensor is failing or that the torque converter is having a problem providing a constant pressure. Either way, the place to start is the transmission.

this sounds like a torque converter issue.... this was a common issue with these and some xj models between 2003-2005...the symptoms will be the car would rev while cruising at a certain speed...but the speed wouldnt increase do to slipping...

Torqu converter clutch seems bad, drive uphill with 1 foot on gas & tap brakes at same time, if engine revs up, this is the problem

First check for vacuum leaks. But your symtoms lead me to think that your catalitic converters are clogged. next time you start your engine check the pressure coming out of the exhaust pipe. there should be a decent amount. put your hand over the end, it should feel like it wants to blow it off. Have someone rev it up, and if the pressure doesn't increase alot then it's your converters. Another sure way to check is to remove an 02 sensor in front of the converter. If the engine performance increases, thats the problem.

Seems like the common low fuel pressure issue.

There is a hidden low pressure (3 bar) in line pump on Renault DCi's, I think it is on the passenger side flitch on your year.

Is it cold ( around -3 to +6) where you are?? This kills the inline pump because derv gets thick and glooky causing it to sieze up.

When this happens the HP pump is starved and revs limit to 2500.

Engine light


you have a cloged cat converter, or an exhaust leak near the manifold... if you rev it at idle and it sounds loud check under car for loudness, if your driving and your going about 30 and it sounds like 90, its the cat converter, replace is the only fix for converters
