Question about 2005 Volvo S40

3 Answers

Lost power steering, car died, changed battery, and barley made it home. The battery has power, but when you turn the key on the dome light and other lights, radio, windows, etc don't work.

I have tried to jump start, and clean and reconnecting the terminals, nothing. I was getting a power steering service light, then after trying to get the car started, got immoblizer light, after everything stopped working, I got a steering wheel lock light. but the wheel is not locked. turn the key on and get nothing, no windows, radio, nothing. windows were going slow before car stopped, and locks are slow too, when they work.

hi mate your battery voltage reading indicates a faulty battery or discharged battery don't look at anything thing else its the battery mate trust me

  • big moose Apr 27, 2015

The battery is brand new, just got it. And when I disconnected the battery volts went up, and when when connected, stays the same till you put the key on. Then it drops. I will try another battery and see if it changes anything.

Replace ignition switch

Posted on Apr 27, 2015

Testimonial: "So while I wait for the ignition switch to come in I did another test. Cleaned all wire connections, and hooked up battery. Volt meter says 11.57v, (note: haven't charged battery since I tried jump starting) hooked up battery, same volts. Opened the driver side door, volts dropped almost instantly, down below 4v. Dome light dimmed and died. Unhooked battery and watched the volts slowly climb back up to 11.37v. Still waiting on ignition switch, but seems strange that just opening a door and having dome lights go out in a matter of seconds, I'm going to try another "new" battery."

check for shorts to doors or lights

you might have a problem with the bulkhead,it might be corroded on the firewall side.

  • big moose May 01, 2015

I will check into that, but it semms to drain with any power I use. If I hook up battery and use the remote to do the immobilizer reset, just unlocking the door, or turning on the puddle lights, it drops and dies.

you have a bad short pull each fuse until it stops draining

If you;ve lost power steering I'd be looking for a broken fan belt/serpentine belt. That would also provide power to your alternator which would explain the loss of electricals. Hope this helps

Posted on Apr 27, 2015

Testimonial: "There are no broken belts, loss of power happens when I try to start car and turn key on. When I got it running on my way home, power steering loss, and electrical loss while driving, like a bad alternator. But once home, and car struggled to get there, wouldn't start as if the battery was dead. But when I checked the battery before trying jump start, had 12.5v, as it was a brand new battery bought just moments before."

Hi Big Moose: Johnny Rebel sounds like he knows his Volvo's. The thing I don't understand is that power steering is typically associated with a mechanical linkage (pump, drive belt, hydraulic ram) while all of your electricals are associated with the battery, ground, switches, and wiring. The only common link that I can see is the drive belt. Maybe I'm missing something. Hey Johnny..... Help! Ted

  • big moose Apr 27, 2015

i have been leaning to change the ignition switch, i know the power steering pump is elctrical and dont run on belts alone. I ordered a new switch and should get it tomorrow. im gonna try and see if that works.

Sounds like the vehicle is not charging you may need a new alternator get the car going with jump leads again and test the voltage at the battery terminals with a DC volt meter expect 13.5-14.5 if you get less than 13.5 your alternator is bad or wiring fault also check the alternator belt is tight.

Testimonial: "So I checked the battery this morning, I left it unplugged all night. (NOTE: last time checked yesterday I had 7.35v before unplugging battery). this morning I had 11.57v. hooked up battery, checked earth wire on strut tower, with power on battery, got the same volts. same ground/ earth on strut, checked main fuses in engine bay, same volts through out all. turned key to run position, all lights dimmed and heard some clicking in the fuse panel inside car. then dome light went out, all power has been lost. checked battery, and only had 3.87v. disconnected battery, and checked again, and had over 11v. I am starting to think it might be the ignition switch solenoid, aka starter control unit. tried wiggling the connectors to the in car fuse panel while key was on, and still got nothing."

I thought the same thing, but I charged the battery, and couldn't get the car to start. And now with a charged battery, it only clicked like I had a dead battery, then it drained the battery again, recharged battery again, and now it wont do anything, no power to windows, radio, and when you turn the key after unhooking the battery and reconnecting, turn the key to pos 1 dash lights up, turn to pos 2 and it lights up for a second, and goes blank, turn to start and nothing happens. And lights in car flicker and dull, check battery and volts have dropped to below 12v. And everytime you turn key, volts drop more and more.

  • big moose Apr 27, 2015

And it is a new battery just bought two days ago. And when fully charged, the windows went down slow, like it was dead.

  • Richard Apr 27, 2015

Ok check the battery voltage it should be 12.5 and above if thats good test between the battery positive and engine block it should be the same i am suspecting a bad earth but could be bad positive check from the fusebox to an earth for the same battery voltage

Start by insuring the battery and charging system are good. Some of these systems act very strange if the battery charge gets low.

Hi

Yes it sounds like the alternator voltage regulator is wearing down and needs to be changed or replaced.

If you can get your hands on a 12 volt multimeter, turn the setting to 20 dc and place the negative wire on the negative battery post and the positive wire on the positive battery post.

The battery with motor off should be 12.6 volts and higher, start the the car the read out should be 14.,2 or higher.

You can turn the lights and heater on to see if the alternator can cope with the load.

if read out is less then you need to change or replace it.

Cheers

You need to have the alternator checked for proper output and go from there. You may have flood it with water and that caused damage to it.

Driving home today in our 2006 Jetta. first the ABS lights came on, then the air bag warning, then the brake light, then the battery light, and an EPC light, all within minutes, then the power steering...

it could be causeed by one problem which led to other problems it sounds to me like your car was shuting down abs stands for anti brakeing sytem that didnt do it that light comes on when theres a fault in the brakes have you had any trouble with your brakes lately when you turn key on with out starting car does the lights still come on the the not haveing power steering issue that was from your car dieing you only have power steering when car is running when you say epc light what do you mean by epc sounds to me like something shorted out causeing the ecm to do that or you have a bad battery them lights will come on if your car dies and you dont notice it

this sound to me like at first I thought it was a fuse, as the problem went on it shifted more toward a weak cell in the battery, if a weak cell sits for a little while the battery will not hold the charge in that cell and that will cause loss of power, "its charge", in tne other cells. you had mentioned you used another battery and it ran great but when the battery was removed, things went wrong. You may check to see if there is water in your battery

hey its a good idea to chack all the levels before starting especialy power steering gearbox etc... apart from that i would check that the fanbelt is still on and that the battery has good charge... if you know someone that may lend you a computer you could try changing that aswell, because its realy the only thing that could cause everything to loose power but im not sure why it would just die like that ..

My 99 Expedition just died while driving. After towing it home it now wont even turn over. I can jump the starter and it engages and I have power to dome light and headlights but when I turn key nothing (...

I has an 86 Mustang that did a similar thing and it turned out that the battery actually shorted out. This happens when one of the plates inside the battery brakes off and then touches another plate. When mine died it was like I turned the iginition off. It wouldn't turn over even with jumper cables.

Jeep won't start

Charge the battery and have it load tested...It may have just given up...check the charging system and also, perhaps did you leave something on in the car? (dome light, glove box light etc)
