If your code scanner does not provide definitions for the codes you can google the code letter and number. Most manufactures use the same definitions for their codes. Just type in your vehicle model and the code

What are the codes? A scanner does more than pull codes.

I have not scanned yet, this will be my first time, what else does the scanner do please? I would like to learn as I cannot afford new cars. Thank you.

  • Randy Ohler Apr 25, 2015

A scanner does a lot. Gives info on numbers and if things turn on and off. But I suspect you are going to use a code reader. These only give codes for the engine and transmission. You can get codes readers for $20. A cheap, older scanner will cost $1000+.

  • Randy Ohler Apr 25, 2015

Read it and posts the codes.

Thank you, yes I was planning on a code reader.

SECTION 307-01B: Automatic Transmission - 4R70W 2002 F-150 Workshop Manual DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING Procedure revision date: 06/20/2001 Diagnostic Strategy Troubleshooting an electronically controlled automatic transmission is simplified by using the proven method of diagnosis. One of the most important things to remember is that there is a definite procedure to follow.
NOTE: Do not take any short cuts or assume that critical checks or adjustments have already been made.
Follow the procedures as written to avoid missing critical components or steps.
To properly diagnose a concern have the following publications available:
  • Transmission Reference Manual.
  • Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual.
  • TSBs and OASIS Messages.
  • Wiring Diagram.
These publications provide the information required when diagnosing transmission concerns.
Use the Diagnostic Flow Chart as a guide and follow the steps as indicated.
Preliminary Inspection
  • Know and understand the customer's concern.
  • Verify the concern by operating the vehicle.
  • Check the fluid levels and condition.
  • Check for non-factory add-on items.
  • Check shift linkages for proper adjustment.
  • Check TSBs and OASIS messages regarding the concern.
Diagnostics
  • Carry out on-board diagnostic procedures key on engine off (KOEO) and key on engine running (KOER).
  • Record all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  • Repair all non-transmission codes first.
  • Repair all transmission codes second.
  • Erase all continuous codes and attempt to repeat them.
  • Repair all continuous codes.
  • If only pass codes are obtained, refer to Diagnosis By Symptom for further information and diagnosis.
Follow the diagnostic sequence to diagnose and repair the concern the first time.
It's best if you take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop if your not familiar with any of thing's listed above .Need a scan tool to check for DTC'S .

I am having a problem with the automatic transmission on my car is there a diagnostic test that can determine iof there is a problem wit fuses or sensors

Yes the computer in the car detect faults with the operation of the engine and the auto trans and generates fault codes. It logs the fault (not the cause which it cannot determine) and there can be multiple different problems that can generate a particular fault code so a proper diagnosis is very important.

Take your car to a Chev dealer service center or to a competent independent Chev specialist and have the vehicle scanned for faults and any irregularities with the operation of the transmission. The scanning equipment picks up the particular fault code or codes the computer has generated and is also used to check irregularities with the operation of the transmission.

For your issue I would go to a dealer as they will have the best diagnostic equipment, especially where transmissions are concerned. They will more than likely have also seen other vehicles of the same model with the same symptoms as your vehicle has now. Most likely there will be an electronic component on your transmission that has failed and needs to be replaced but you won't know until a proper scan and then a diagnosis of the faults have been carried out.

2006 gmc canyon will not go into 4 wheeldrive after 5 minutes of driving

The first place to start is have it checked for codes an to see if a scan tool will communicate with the 4X4 control module !
Diagnostic Starting Point - Transfer Case
Begin the system diagnosis with the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle . The Diagnostic System Check will provide the following information:
?€¢
The identification of the control module or modules that command the system.

?€¢
The ability of the control module or modules to communicate through the serial data circuit.

?€¢
The identification of any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and the status of the codes.

The use of the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.
Install a scan tool.
Does the scan tool power up?
Go to Step 3
Go to Scan Tool Does Not Power Up

3

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to establish communication with all of the control modules on the vehicle. Refer to Scan Tool Does Not Communicate with Class 2 Device for the modules you should expect to observe.
Does the scan tool communicate with all of the expected vehicle control modules?
If you don't have a scan tool that will communicate with all modules on the vehicle or understand this , your best bet is to take it to a ASE certified repair shop or the dealer .

A light in my ford freestar (on dash- lower left side) is blinking and I dont know what it means. it looks like a wrench

Hello,

The on board diagnostic (OBD) computer in your vehicle has detected that there is a problem with one of the systems on your vehicle.
The OBD system will generate an error code which will tell the service technician what the problem is with the vehicle.
The vehicle should be taken to a service center to have it tested and repairs made if necessary.
Some service centers and parts store offer a free service to retrieve the error code, decipher it and recommend repairs.
Most dealerships will charge for the service.
If you have or know a friend that has the proper OBD scan tool for your vehicle, the code can be read and deciphered to determine the problem with the vehicle and the OBD reset to clear the code.

When I put my 1998 Pontiac Transport Montana into gear the ABS and TCS warning lights come on and stay on

The only way to know where the concern is would be to retrieve the trouble codes; without scan tool, this information not provided by the manufacturer.

Self-diagnosis procedures (with the diagnostic scan tool):
- With the ignition switch OFF, connect the diagnostic scan tool (Hi-scan pro) to the data link connector located under side of master vacuum in engine compartment.
- Make sure the ignition switch is in the on position, and then choose correct vehicle and model, proceed to diagnostic data link menu item.
- Choose the inspection item after initializing the unit.
- Press malfunction code detection No. 1 and diagnostic scan tool will display any malfunction code found.
Notice: A malfunction code is a four-digit number that is continuously output until the failure code is erased by the diagnostic scan tool.
- From the list of failure codes, verify the failed part and repair it according to self-diagnosis procedures.
- After repair, erase all malfunction codes stored in the ABS control unit by selecting inspection item (No. 4).

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

From a quick web search, code P0014 supposedly indicates a problem with the timing advance. I would check that the you have the base timing set correctly. The computer has to be in diagnostic mode when you check it, which requires putting a jumper across two wires at the diagnostic plug. Refer to a repair manual for directions on how to do this for your vehicle. The base timing should be 5 degrees before top dead center (BTDC) for cylinder 1 at sea level. Add 1 degree BTDC for each 1000 feet above sea level (if you're 3000 feet above sea level, base timing setting should be 8 degrees BTDC).

What's going on when the check engine light comes on?

Your ecm (computer) has found an error. You need to get it "scanned" to see what code it has, and then the code will guide you to the problem. It may be minor, you never know.

1994 cadillac eldorado.will not idle.stalls out when stopping.when in part idles up and down

Sounds like a bad TPS or Idle Speed motor. You need to Scan it for codes. Cadilliac has on board diagnostics. Hold down the (off) and (warmer) buttons on the temp control until it goes into diagnosis mode. Then it will give you the codes right on the dash. Turn the key off to exit diagnosis mode after you write down the codes. Then google the codes.
