Echo 1.5 harmonic balancer will not stay tight

The only thing that holds the balancer from spinning on the crankshaft is a roll pin and after i replace it the moment i start the car it shears off and when the AC comes the balancer starts slipping on the crank and destroys the balancer in mintues

I have never seen a harmonic balancer located by a roll pin. Mostly these are located by a wudruff key if they actually need locating or positioning on the crankshaft.
The need for the pulley or damper to be located is much reduced in these modern times...

The key doesn't or shouldn't transmit any torque at all as once mounted the pulley is clamped tightly between the crankshaft and other gears or sprockets and the large retaining nut or bolt with it's large heavy-duty clamping washer or flange. It is important for the retaining bolt to be tightened to specifications.
Sometimes the pulley or damper is in two parts with the hub being retained on the crankshaft by the large nut or bolt and the outer part being bolted to it by four or more small setscrews. This arrangement sometimes uses a small roll pin for locating purposes.

Remove old crankshaft pulley ( Harmonic Balancer), by putting sturdy socket,think its 19mm, or 3/4 " on the center crankshaft bolt, with a good size breaker bar, wedge the breaker bar in between the suspension, and drive axle, to keep the breaker bar from spinning, while, you now turn the key inside the car, to engage starter, to spin the crankshaft,which may take several attempts, of turning the key, and putting socket back on, they are very stubborn,to break the center bolt loose,
Then remove harmonic balancer, with a PULLER, which requires 2 bolts, in the threaded holes, one on each side of the now empty center bolt hole, autozone , advance, has these to loan out, only requires deposit, which they give back to you, when you return it.
Put square key in slot on bare crankshaft, slide harmonic balancer,(crankshaft pulley,while lining up the square key,and tighten crankshaft bolt.

Replacing the Crankshaft and Camshaft sensors on a 1991 and later Buick Park...


If your car is misfiring in a rhythmical pattern when you first start it up for the day or dieing when engine is hot, it could mean your Camshaft or Crankshaft sensors need replacement.

Important, disconnect negative cable from the battery before doing any work on electrical system. Wear safety goggles.

Tools recommended:
Break Bar, Torque Wrench, ratchet driver and a full metrics ratchet socket set, one Q tip, large straight blade screwdriver, ratchet extension and adapters if needed.

First we'll start with the easiest and cheapest of the two sensors.

Replacing the camshaft sensor:

The camshaft sensor is located on the right side of the engine, behind the water pump pulley.

1. Loosen the screws to the water pump pulley with a breaker bar before removing the serpentine belt. Always turn counter clockwise to loosen.

2.Remove the serpentine belt via the belt tension-er.

3.Use a regular ratchet driver to finish removing the belt pulley from the water pump.

4.Remove the bolt holding the camshaft sensor in place and disconnect electrical connector. Secure the connector with a clothes pin so you don't lose it down in the engine compartment. Clean around the sensor to avoid getting dirt in the engine.

5. Pull the camshaft sensor straight out with a slight twisting motion.

6. Lightly lubricate the O-Ring on the new sensor with fresh motor oil, and install in the engine.

7. installation is the reverse of removal.

Crankshaft
Sensor:

1. Jack up the front passenger side of the car and safely support it on jack-stands.

2.Remove the tire, remove the inner tire well splash guard cover.

3.Before removing serpentine belt, loosen the center bolt on the harmonic balancer/vibration dampener. (crankshaft pulley)

4. Remove serpentine belt via the belt tensioner.

5.Finish loosening and remove the bolt from the harmonic balancer.
Have an assistant help you, using care not to let the weight of the harmonic balancer rest on the bolt as it can be damaged. Gently pry it of with a straight blade screwdriver. Leave the woodruff key in the crankshaft. Use care to not damage the crankshaft during removal as oil leakage could result. Mark the relationship between the crankshaft and the pulley, so you will be able to line the pulley up just right during re -installation.

6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the crankshaft sensor, secure the connector with clothes pin and loosen the bolts holding the sensor pedestal in place.

7.Separate the old sensor from the pedestal, and install the new sensor, just the same way the old sensor came out. Using the suggested crankshaft sensor alignment tool on the back of the harmonic balancer, making sure the fins on the harmonic balancer pass through the sensor's slot and don't hit it. If any fins on the back side of the harmonic balancer are bent, damaged, or missing, replace the harmonic balancer assembly.

Installation is the reverse of removal. It is imperative the crankshaft sensor be aligned properly before engine start up to avoid damage. Use care not to over tighten bolts during installation. Always tighten to manufacturer's recommended torque.

How to change crankshaft sensor on 1999 grand price gt


To get to the sensor, the harmonic balancer pulley on the crankshaft has to be removed. The center bolt on the harmonic balancer is on very tight. To loosen without an impact wrench, remove starter motor and wedge a piece of wood against the flywheel, or use a pry bar and hold the ring gear on the flywheel rigid, while loosening the crank bolt. The engine will try to turn backward when you loosen the crank bolt, so you have to hold the flywheel rigid. Once the bolt is removed, see if you can get the harmonic balancer pulley off without a gear puller. Just try tapping it to see if it slides off, or use two screwdrivers on each side behind the pulley and see if you can start it sliding off. If it is on very tight, as many are, you will have to get hold of a harmonic balancer removal tool-a simple, inexpensive puller that bolts onto pulley and can be drawn off. You might be able to rent the tool too.
BTW, you will need to have the wheel removed from passenger side, and the inner fender cover removed to get to the crankshaft. Once the pulley is off you can unbolt the sensor and put the new one on. GM recommends using a sensor alignment tool to install, because the thin vanes on the back of the harmonic balancer pass through the sensor, and if not aligned right could damage one or the other. If you don't have the tool, put the sensor on loosely mounted, just snugged up finger tight, then test the pulley will slide through the sensor slots without touching either side of sensor. If it looks right, tighten down the sensor in place, install the harmonic balancer pulley and tighten the center crank bolt to about 105 foot pounds.
Wedge the flywheel again so the engine won't turn when tightening the crankshaft bolt.

Harmonic balancer standing still while car is running


Are the belts completely still while running? If not the balancer might actually be spinning fine and just look still because it is spinning fast enough (a friend of mine came to me with the same thing). Looking at the 1990 harmonic balancer the only thing that would seem to cause that is if the bolt wasn't tight enough or somehow went bad, in which case only the bolt would spin. Or the alignment piece (a small metal bit on the back side) had the dual function of traction and broke (don't lose this bit if it's not broke). Or something more serious involving what the bolt threads into. By the way you will need a special tool to remove the harmonic balancer if you plan to do that.

Had my Harmonic Balancer replace now it shuts off after 10 mins of it being on


the garage may have did something to the crank position sensor that is located behind the harmonic balance. there is a ring gear there to for the timing

Where is the crankshaft sensor on a 3.8L in a 97 buick lesaber


Hi,
The sensor is located to the right of the crankshaft behind the vibration dampner (harmonic balancer). You will need a balancer puller and a special tool to space the new sensor correctly.
(can be done also with eye spacing, but the tool is recommended to ensure proper spacing as to prevent damage to new sensor and / or harmonic balancer.) You will also need a strap wrench to hold balancer pulley in place while removing and re-installing balancer to crankshaft bolt. (helper required)

Procedure for replacement:
Remove negative battery cable.
Set parking (emergency) brake.
Release tension on serpentine drive belt and remove belt from harmonic balancer pulley. ( large pulley at bottom of engine)
Break loose lug nuts on passenger side front tire, do not remove bolts yet.
Raise and support vehicle on passenger side, remove wheel.
Remove plastic splash guard (cover) from passenger side wheel well.
Remove dampner / balancer center retaining bolt (counterclockwise, it is torqued very tight.) Use a strap wrench around pulley and have a helper hold that in place while using a 1/2" breaker bar and socket to turn pulley bolt out of crankshaft. Be careful not to rotate engine in a counterclockwise direction while breaking the bolt loose.
Using balancer puller, remove dampner / balancer pulley from engine.
You will now see the crank sensor to the right of the crankshaft bolted to the timing cover.
Disconnect sensor wiring and remove retaining bolts, remove sensor.
Put new sensor in place and screw in bolts, do not tighten them yet.
Reconnect wiring to sensor.
Now use special tool to properly space sensor. If you cannot find one at the parts store, you can space the sensor with the balancer pully held in place (not installed yet) and space the sensor evenly with the veins on the hub of the balancer pulley. Take your time and be sure it is as evenly spaced as possible.
Tighten sensor bolts.
Clean balancer hub free of any oil and dirt deposits using brake or carbeurator cleaner.
Reinstall balancer to crankshaft by tapping around the inner surface of pulley with a rubber hammer.
It is a press fit, so be sure you have it started evenly and progress slowly in a circular motion to ensure you are keeping it aligned straight with the crankshaft.
Reinstall balancer bolt using the same method as removal, torque bolt to 110 foot pounds, then tap around balancer again twice with rubber hammer, turn the engine 2 full revolutions clockwise using the balancer to crankshaft bolt, then tighten bolt an additional 1/4 turn.
Replace splash guard, put wheel on tightening lugs to finger tight and then wrench tight in a star pattern.
Lower vehicle until wheel makes contact with floor, tighten lug nuts to 115 foot pounds in a star pattern using a torque wrench.
Fully lower vehicle, remove jack.
Re-install serpentine drive belt
Re-connect negative battery cable.

CRANKSHAFT PULLEY IS THE HARMONIC BALANCER.YOU NEED THESE TOOLS TO REMOVE HARMONIC BALANCER, YOU NEED HARMONIC BALANCER REMOVER AND INSTALLER TOOL.YOU NEED A LARGE PIN SPANNER WRENCH TO HOLD HARMONIC BALANCER IN PLACE WHILE LOOSEN THE HARMONIC BALANCER BOLT.

There is a key way in the crankshaft and the balancer with a woodruff key that keeps it locked in place. The woodruff key resembles a half moon shape. You will have to remove the balancer to see what kind of damage there is and go from there.

I have read the question about the crankshaft pulley wobbling really bad and needing a harmonic balancer and my question is....is the harmonic balancer and the crankshaft the same thing? I have the same...


The end of the crankshaft is usually called a snout, because that is what it looks like — just a shaft sticking out of the front of the engine between 1½" and 2" in diameter, with a threaded hole in the front, and a key-way along the side.

The harmonic balancer slides over the end of the crankshaft, and is held in place by a bolt and washer goiing into the front of the crankshaft.

The harmonic balancer usually has a ring around the outside separated from the part that goes over the crankshaft by a ring of neoprene. The neoprene and that outer ring are the vibration damper, preventing the crankshaft from ringing. On the face of the balancer the pulleys for accessories are mounted.

Every engine I have worked on — except motorcycles, lawnmowers and outboards — use this arrangement.

Regarding your case, I would do the disassembly first, then — with the parts in your hand — go get the replacement parts. Best guarantee I know of to make sure you get the right parts.

Crankshaft sensor on a Monte Carlo 2001 SS 3.8 where is this on the car and how to replace it?


3.8L Engine
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove the serpentine belts from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4. Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly.
  5. Remove the right inner fender access cover.
  6. Hold the flywheel with a (J 37096) flywheel holding tool.
  7. Using 28 mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  8. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer, using a (J 38197-A) balancer remover.
  9. Remove the crankshaft position sensor shield (1). Do not use a pry bar.
  10. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  11. Remove the attaching bolts from the crankshaft position sensor.
  12. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the block face.
To install:
  1. Position the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor to the block.
  2. Install the bolts to hold the CKP sensor to the block face. Tighten the bolts to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  3. Reinstall the crankshaft position sensor shield.
  4. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  5. Position the crankshaft harmonic balancer on the crankshaft.
  6. Hold the flywheel with a (J 37096) flywheel holding tool.
  7. Using a (J 36660-A) torque/angle meter, tighten the harmonic balancer bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 76 degrees.
  8. Install the right inner fender access cover.
  9. Install the right front wheel and tire assembly.
  10. Tighten the wheel nuts to 104 ft. lbs. (140 Nm.).
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Reinstall the serpentine belts.
