My steering wheel is getting hard to turn in my Lincoln L's and I have power steering fluid

Hi Kim I'm AL the owner of Big A's Auto Repair.
Kim, when the steering gets hard to turn there are two problems that can occur. (1) The pump could be going bad and not building the proper pressures it need to work the steering properly. (2) The steering gear itself can be defective and putting back pressure on the pump instead of receiving the pressures it needs to work properly.
Kim you will need to have the pressures checked on the pump to see which one of these issues is causing your problem. This will save you money because your not replacing the wrong part, then having to by the correct part too. Hope this helps and should you need help again visit my auto repair website here:

Could be several things that would cause this. But check the drive belt that turns the pump. The belt wears out and when turning, the pump will slip/not turn as fast. Have some one watch the pump pulley as you turn the wheel. It will slow down ,stop, or be jerking.

check that the return lines on the steering rack are not blocked.
And make sure the Drive belt for the pump is tight.

Hi,
Intermittent hard power steering, at the begining of the turn of the steering wheel, once disturbed past the hard part, works normal.
Had fluid change, I notice a sensor, on the control block tower of the rack, is this at fault ? thanks buckleyeng.

it sounds like you've got a really bad leak in a hose/pump/reservoir

plus, power steering fluid isn't the greatest for cleaning the engine with ;)

Keep an eye on the serpentine belt, b/c the leaking fluid might eat it up and cause premature failure.

when looking at the engine with the hood up, look to the right hand side for something that looks like this (#1 in the pic): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=ET37&mospid=47720&btnr=32_0957&hg=32&fg=20

it will be black in color, but don't confuse it with the oil filter housing. power steering reservoir will have a unique cap (#2 in the pic) that can be removed with your hand. the one that has the large nut on top is the oil filter. remove the cap and put in the correct fluid.

You likely have a bad power steering pump or a hose that is leaking. Do not put any fluid other than power steering fluid in the power steering reservoir. if you do you will wreck the hoses and pump. Better not drive it till you get it repaired or you may ruin something else or have an accident.

Steering is noisy at slow speeds when turning


This car is essentailly the same as the Lincoln LS & T-Bird.

ISSUE: Some 2003-2005 Thunderbird, Aviator, and Lincoln LS vehicles may exhibit steering gear squeak when turning the steering wheel, especially during low speed parking maneuvers. The noise may sound like it is coming from the steering column area and may be felt as a roughness in the steering wheel, while turning.
ACTION: Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE NOTE: USE ONLY THE FLUID AND ADDITIVE SPECIFIED IN THIS ARTICLE. USING ANY OTHER FLUIDS OR ADDITIVES MAY RESULT IN SEAL DETERIORATION AND LEAKS.
  1. Open the hood and remove the power steering reservoir cap.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 100-00.
  3. With engine off, drain power steering fluid by disconnecting steering lines and clamp plate from steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Removal and Installation procedure in Workshop Manual, Section 211-00, follow only the steps required to disconnect the steering lines.
  4. Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock to drain fluid completely.
  5. Reconnect steering lines and clamp plate to steering gear. Torque retainer to 15 N-m (11 lb-ft) for Lincoln LS and Thunderbird, torque to 25 N-m (18 lb-ft) for Aviator.
  6. Lower vehicle.
  7. In a clean container mix 50 ml (10 teaspoons or 1.7 oz.) of Motorcraft Additive Friction Modifier, Part Number XL-3, with 50 ml of Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid, Part Number XT-2-QDX. NOTE: DO NOT PERFORM STEPS 8 AND 9 ON A HOT VEHICLE.
  8. Pour the above mixture into the power steering reservoir.
  9. Top off (fill) the power steering system with Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid, Part Number XT-2-QDX and reinstall the power steering reservoir cap.
  10. Raise vehicle on hoist enough so the front wheels are off the ground and can be turned from lock-to-lock.
  11. Start the engine and keep it at idle. Remain inside of the vehicle.
  12. Slowly cycle the steering wheel from lock-to-lock for two (2) minutes.
  13. Quickly and forcefully turn the steering wheel in one direction to full lock (either side). Bounce the steering wheel on/off of full lock twenty (20) times forcefully. NOTE: IT IS CRITICAL THAT THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED QUICKLY AND FORCEFULLY IN ORDER TO CREATE A PRESSURE SPIKE IN THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM.
  14. Repeat Step 13 in the other direction. Return the steering wheel to on center position.
  15. Slowly turn steering wheel to full lock in one direction (either direction) to achieve maximum pump pressure. Hold at full lock for one (1) second, then turn the steering wheel back 90 degrees as quickly as possible. Repeat this procedure twenty (20) times. NOTE: DO NOT HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL AGAINST THE STOPS FOR MORE THAN THREE TO FIVE (3-5) SECONDS AT A TIME. DAMAGE TO THE POWER STEERING PUMP MAY OCCUR.
  16. Repeat Step 15 in the other direction.
  17. Cycle the steering wheel slowly for 1 minute to confirm that the squeak is corrected and return vehicle to the customer. NOTE: IF THE SQUEAK CONTINUES, REPEAT STEPS 13-16 ONE ADDITIONAL TIME. IF THE SQUEAK IS STILL NOT CORRECTED PROCEED TO STEP 18.
  18. If the squeak is still present after performing Step 17, replace the steering gear. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 211-00 for removal and installation procedures.

The power steering on my 1992 lincoln town car is getting hard and has power steering fluid in it. Then the car starts to over heat and shoots antifreeze out of the resivoir.


sounds like the belt is slipping check the idler pully fof tension by pulling on belt and it should be taunt.check belt on contact surface for cracking if so replace. start up car and have someone turn steering wheel to verify slippage by looking at belt or power steering pulley====keep hands away from moveing parts

Power steering pump replaced, start to work ok, after 10 milles driving, steering wheel is hard, like pump is not working, under hood everything look ok.

Start by checking power steering fluid then see if noise is coming from power steering pump. listen in area of power steering pump while someone turns steering wheel for you.

98 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL, DROVE TO WORK JUST FINE, AND THEN STARTED BACK UP AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS VERY HARD TO TURN. I PUT THE CAR ON A LIFT AND TURNED THE WHEEL AND SAW THAT THE FLUID WAS BEING FORCED...


You added too much fluid. You should reduce it too the proper level. You can dip it out.

Hard steering


Check the Serpentine belt. If it's loose, not only will the power steering be very difficult but it will tend to run hot and eventually overheat. The belt may be worn and slipping as well. If this isn't the issue, you may have a leak coming from the power steering hose (you had to add fluid). Have someone in the car turning the wheel while you watch under the hood watching the power steering pump. With the fluid full, you should immediately see any leaks right away while the wheel is being turned. Hope this helps with your problem. Best of luck to you!

I have the same car and don't get bent at this answer .... but if you bought it used and don't know the full extent of the car check the computer and change the steering to low or normal effort ... High effort is harder than my z28 used to be ... and going around entrance/exit ramps you really have to put some effort into it ...

It sounds like your power steering fluid is low or out. If not I would say the power steering pump is out.
